Giving Back for July

July 31, 2023

Giving Back recognizes businesses and organizations that are helping our communities. Here’s a look at who gave back for July.

Aerostar

Aerostar has agreed to sponsor programming and create an enhanced experience for visitors of the Wells Fargo CineDome & Sweetman Planetarium at the Washington Pavilion. As the programming collaboration begins between the Pavilion and Aerostar, the goal will be to provide visitors of all ages with an upgraded opportunity to explore the marvels of the universe and beyond. The sponsorship agreement is valued at $30,000 over a three-year time frame, including funding for a launch event in September offering admission to the Wells Fargo CineDome & Sweetman Planetarium, Kirby Science Discovery Center and Visual Arts Center at no cost.

Joe and Jennifer Kirby

The Sioux Falls Parks Foundation has received a $500,000 gift from philanthropists and civic volunteers Joe and Jennifer Kirby to renovate and expand the locker room areas at the Midco Aquatic Center. The renovation and expansion project, which will begin in 2024, is designed to better serve individuals and families who visit the aquatic facility, which city officials say served more than 220,000 users last year. The total cost of the project is $1.2 million, with the city of Sioux Falls contributing $700,000. An avid swimmer, Jennifer Kirby uses the aquatic center on a regular basis. “The Midco Aquatic Center is truly a gem in our community — a state-of-the-art facility that so many individuals and families use for fun and fitness. As our city continues to grow, we anticipate that the number of aquatic center users will also increase, so this project is coming at the right time,” Kirby said. “Joe and I were honored to work with the Sioux Falls Parks Foundation to bring the idea for this gift to life.”

Mary Chilton Daughters of the American Revolution Foundation

The Mary Chilton Daughters of the American Revolution Foundation has awarded a Dorothy Day Davenport Grant to the Veterans Community Project. Funds from the $50,000 grant will be used to offset remaining expenses associated with construction of 25 tiny homes that aim to equip homeless veterans with the tools needed to return to a “stable, prosperous and independent life,” according to the Veterans Community Project website. The VCP Village is on a 2-acre property near Axtell Park School in north-central Sioux Falls and is intended for homeless veterans to live while seeking a permanent housing solution. Veterans live in the homes at no cost to them, and they get to keep the home’s furnishings when they move out.

Security National Bank

Security National Bank hosted a customer appreciation event at its Lake Lorraine branch. The event featured a free lunch provided by the bank from Tony’s Catering, live music and prize giveaways. More than 460 people attended the event.
