Gift shop to close storefront but move to marketplace

March 26, 2021

A gift shop is giving up its storefront but selling its curated goods through a marketplace south of Sioux Falls.

The final day for Brushy Creek Gifts at 815 S. Marion Road is April 2. Owner Jimmy Rhodes opened the shop three years ago, and with that lease expiring, he decided not to sign another one. Instead, he’s renting a booth at Stacey’s Vintage-Art-Boutique, east of the Tea exit for Interstate 29.

Customers can find a similar mix of home decor and gift items, including the all-natural bars of soaps Rhodes has been making for 27 years and the tea towels he makes with a friend.

There’s a story behind many of the items he buys for the business. Brushy Creek carries hand-painted pottery Rhodes found while traveling in Spain, lamps with shades made from leaves that were created by farmers and artists in the Philippines and whimsical pendulum clocks made by a married couple.

“The artist, her husband takes her work and makes the clocks. It’s just this little team effort. I think it’s really cool.”

He’ll miss sharing stories about the pieces with customers but plans to be at Stacey’s two or three days a month.

“That is what I’m about, trying to bring unique things to people,” Rhodes said. “It’s really sad for me to close this, but it’s exciting that it can still go on.”

Because everything in the store won’t fit in the space at Stacey’s, merchandise is marked up to 75 percent off.

Final store hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
