Until six years ago, Mary Madson had never worn glasses. But like many people over 40, she found she needed readers to assist her when she was enjoying a book or the newspaper for long periods. That worked well enough for a while, but Madson eventually needed glasses full time for distance vision.

“I lost so many pairs of readers!” she said. “When those stopped working and I needed even more help, I tried contacts, but I have really dry eyes, and they just weren’t comfortable. So glasses it was.”

Despite her best efforts, she never got used to wearing them. A regular at the gym and on the golf course, she was frustrated when her frames would slide down her nose or she needed to switch them for her prescription sunglasses. Like her readers, she misplaced those too.

“All those prescriptions really started to add up!” she said.

Along with that, Madson began to notice that she couldn’t see well in the dark, and she was struggling to read menus in dimly lit restaurants. She also had started to avoid driving at night whenever possible.

“I’d been noticing those changes for a couple of years, but last year was when I told my optometrist this was really becoming a problem,” she explained. “Unsurprisingly, I had cataracts and was referred to Vance Thompson Vision.”

Madson’s need for cataract surgery was unexpectedly good news for her vision. During the procedure, a patient’s cloudy natural lens is replaced with a clear synthetic one. Depending on a patient’s needs and lifestyle, there can be several lenses to choose from, many of which offer LASIK-like outcomes. Madson chose one of these advanced technology lenses for just that reason.

“Choosing a lens that would solve two things at once was a no-brainer for me,” she said. “I’m active and expect to be for many years to come. Why wouldn’t I take the opportunity to have the clearest vision possible?”

Madson credits the team at Vance Thompson Vision for the success of her surgery and the clear vision she now enjoys.

“Everyone there is just all-around great! They actually make going to the doctor fun. Everyone seemed like they wanted to be there, and it made me want to be there, too,” she said.
