From quaint to party time, here are 5 new patios to enjoy

July 6, 2022

From what’s likely the largest patio in Sioux Falls to one with two tables, we’re highlighting five new and newer patios to check out this summer – when a derecho isn’t blowing through.

Bin 201/Stogeez

Wine bar Bin 201 and cigar bar Stogeez, owned by Jamie and Tim Kant, have turned the former parking/patio area in front of the building at 201 E. 11th St. into a 7,500-square-foot patio with two outdoor bars.

The outdoor bars are open Fridays and Saturdays, but customers are welcome to grab a drink inside and enjoy the patio every day, Jamie Kant said.

The patio offers seating for 290 customers in a variety of spaces. Sit at tables shaded with an umbrella or sink into cushioned wicker chairs around one of 12 fire pits.

Grab a beer or shot of liquor at the smaller bar, or order a frozen rosé — called a frosé– a frozen peach bellini or another drink from one of six slush machines at the larger bar.

If you want wine, you can still get that inside by the ounce from the self-serve taps. That’s also where special drinks such as martinis can be ordered. Bin 201 and Stogeez each have seating inside for about 60 people, so the patio has been a major addition to the businesses, Kant said.

The Kants are offering live music every Friday and Saturday this summer, and every band they’ve booked features at least three musicians, she said.  Off-duty police officers provide security on the weekend. “We absolutely love that we’ve never had an issue.”

Stop by Sunday afternoon and into the early evening for outdoor games and music provided by a DJ.

The bars offer a limited food menu and usually invite a food truck on weekend nights and Sundays.

Customers can smoke anywhere on the patio except for two areas: on the wicker furniture and at the big bar.

The patio is drawing people of all ages, “from 21 to in the 70s,” Jamie said. “It’s been a great patio this summer.”

Hours are 3 p.m. to midnight Monday through Thursday, 3 p.m. to 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday and 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday.

Papa Woody’s Wood Fired Pizza

Papa Woody’s Wood Fired Pizza settled into its new home this spring, so this is the first season for the patio along the north side of The Cascade at Second and Phillips.

With the move, Papa Woody’s gained a full liquor license, so customers can enjoy a variety of drinks.

The patio offers seating for about 50, co-owner Lisa Esser said. “There’s high tops, low tops and a couple of couches with fire pits … we have a variety of everything.”

Customers check in at the hostess stand inside for seating, and there’s full table service.

“It’s a perfect patio to meet a girlfriend for a drink or have the whole family for dinner,” Esser said.

Papa Woody’s is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Hyatt Place

If you’re looking for a generally quiet place, the new Hyatt Place hotel at Lake Lorraine offers a patio overlooking the water.

The patio is on the south side of the five-story building, so you might want to skip it on a blistering hot day. If there’s cloud cover, cooler weather or it’s in the later part of the evening, the setting is fabulous.

There’s seating for almost 30 people at tables or on cushioned chairs and couches. Planters and fire pits add to the ambience. There are stairs down to the small beach area along the lake.

The bar inside offers beer and wine. There are eight beers on tap, others by the bottle and a couple of ciders and hard seltzers. Among the white wine choices are pinot grigio, chardonnay and sauvignon blanc. You’ll also find prosecco, pinot noir and cabernet sauvignon.

Eventually, the bar will have a limited food menu.

The bar is open from 3 to 11 p.m. daily.

The Breaks Coffee Roasting Co.

This downtown coffee shop got permission from the city last summer to try a pop-up patio that took over a few parking spots in front of the building. It worked out great, so it’s back again this summer.

The patio has a wall made of pallets to separate it from the roadway. It offers seating for less than a dozen people at tables and benches, and has umbrellas for shade. It features flowers planted in the burlap sacks that held the coffee beans before they were roasted.

Customers can, of course, get a coffee drink, but The Breaks also serves beer and wine.

Hours at The Breaks, 311 E. 12th St., are 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

Roots of Brasil

Grab a piece of world-cafe life and enjoy a Brazilian beer or Argentinian wine on the sidewalk in front of the new Roots of Brasil restaurant.

The restaurant at 201 N. Weber Ave. offers two tables for two for dining or enjoying a drink.

While the photo shows the tables with umbrellas, those are gone.

“We kept running into a runaway umbrella problem with the wind on that side of the building, and we removed those,” co-owner Mark Gillespie said.

Other drink choices include mimosas and sangrias, along with nonalcoholic juices and other beverages.

Hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
