Former Midas shop has new owner

An auto repair shop is expanding with a second location that’s in a more visible spot on Minnesota Avenue.

Chris Rieger of Chris’s Auto Repair has purchased the former Midas shop at 1901 S. Minnesota Ave.

He started his shop on North Harlem Avenue six years ago.

“We’ve pretty much outgrown this location as far as how many people we can serve,” Rieger said.

“We’ve got five bays here and seven employees. At the new location, we’re planning on six bays there, and as that one grows, we’ll be adding on more employees.”

He leases the shop near Third Street and Kiwanis Avenue and said he’s excited to have his own building on a busy stretch of road in Sioux Falls.

A November opening is possible.

“We’ve got to do a lot of cleaning and painting,” he said. “Then we’ve got the electrical and equipment to get in there.”

The exterior will get a fresh coat of paint too.

Rieger was employed as a mechanic in Highmore before working in the oil fields in North Dakota. He said he decided he didn’t want to be away from home so much, so the family moved to Sioux Falls seven years ago, and he opened Chris’s Auto Repair shortly after that.

“The repair industry has had pretty black eyes for a long time,” Rieger said. “We thought we could do it a little differently. We’ve grown from there. We help a lot of people out. … Basically, we’re here to take care of people’s transportation needs: car repair, truck repair, all the way from basic oil changes and maintenance to major repairs.”

The shop provides free Lyft rides for customers and doesn’t charge for a loaner vehicle if one is needed.

Chris’s also is part of a nationwide warranty program for independent repair shops. Once customers spend a minimum of $20, they get the TechNet coverage for free. It’s a two-year, 24,000-mile warranty that works across the U.S. and also provides roadside assistance and free tows.
