Financial adviser brings entrepreneurial mindset to building practice

Oct. 10, 2023

This week’s Up-and-Comer is Jake Hult, a financial adviser with Northwestern Mutual.

Name: Jake Hult

Age: 25

Hometown: Canton

What brought you to Sioux Falls?

My mother moved us from Norfolk, Nebraska, to Canton, South Dakota, when I was 4 years old. I was attracted to Sioux Falls from a young age and was able to join the community after I graduated from Dakota State.

What keeps you in Sioux Falls?

The connections and friendships I have built over the years are incredibly meaningful, and that is the main reason I stay here in Sioux Falls.

What’s your favorite thing about your job?

I get the most gratitude from being able to bring clients peace of mind and clarity with financial planning from their unique situation/business/life/etc. I am most excited for what the future holds for my firm and what we can build.

How did you get connected to your industry?

Initially, out of high school, I landscaped in the summer before college. I had an entrepreneurial mindset and wanted to start a business. This led me to starting Diamond Detailing, a mobile car detailing business here in Sioux Falls. Quickly, I realized that detailing cars was almost worse than landscaping, but I enjoyed the autonomy of running a business. Thankfully, I joined a networking group in town, and there was a financial adviser that I had reached out to regarding internships. I started building my practice with Northwestern Mutual in May of 2018 and have loved every minute since.

Describe your workplace in three words.

Challenging, engaging, rewarding.

What is something someone might be surprised to learn about you?

I am a huge foodie — always willing to try something new and exciting.

What’s your favorite way to give back to your community?

My team and I are huge advocates and supporters of pediatric cancer research and impacted families. We have helped host multiple events within the community such as the .5K Donut Dash, sand volleyball competition and Camp Bring It On golf tournament that have supported Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, Ronald McDonald’s House and Camp Bring It On.

What’s one business you’d like to see in Sioux Falls that isn’t here now?

Raising Canes — sorry to Slim Chickens.

If you had $1 million to start a business, what kind of business would it be?

Great question, I just picked up golf this year and am hooked. With $1 million, I would start a mobile golf simulator business. We would have multiple air-conditioned trailers that come stocked with all the equipment needed as well as snacks and drinks. Businesses and families would be able to rent the trailers for holidays, work events, etc.
