Father-daughter duo to sell handcrafted work at Night Market

Note: This event has been rescheduled for 12 to 6 p.m. Aug. 29 in the Cherapa Place parking lot.

If you’re looking to hop on the charcuterie trend for your next party or gathering, consider checking out one of the Night Market’s newest vendors.

The Long Barn, owned by father and daughter Larry and Becky Nelson, specializes in woodwork creations, specifically serving and charcuterie boards, as well as photo frames and other decor items.

“It’s really been an unexpected kind of hobby for my dad and I,” Nelson said. “The first art fair he ever went to, he was a vendor at.”

Nelson, a teacher by trade who’s been retired for several years, began woodworking when his granddaughter graduated from high school and they needed a serving board for an event, Nelson said. He made a few extra, and then, the Long Barn was created.

“It’s been a really fun thing to do with my dad,” Nelson said. “He still can’t believe people buy his art.”

At the Night Market, the Long Barn will be selling their signature charcuterie boards, but also advertising some custom work, like furniture.

“We’ve done some tables, end tables, sofa tables, things like that,” Nelson said. “We’re hoping to bring a few for people and let them know we have custom as well.”

The 605 Made Night Market will be from 12 to 6 p.m. Aug. 29 in the parking lot of Cherapa Place. It’s co-organized by Knotty Gnome Variety & Salvage and SiouxFalls.Business and sponsored by The First National Bank in Sioux Falls and Dow Rummel Village.

Nelson said she and her dad are excited to bring the Long Barn, which is based in Luverne, to Sioux Falls and to show their work to the community at the Night Market.

“The Night Market have been really easy to work with and really supportive of the arts,” Nelson said. “It’s nice to be able to be out in the summer, have that sense of community, and just to be able to see people out and about.”
