Entry-level job leads to senior role for entrepreneurial client advocate
June 14, 2022
This week’s Up-and-Comer is Heather Carlin, a senior client advocate on the private client services team at Marsh McLennan Agency.
Name: Heather Carlin
Age: 32
Hometown: Parker
What brought you to Sioux Falls?
Career opportunities.
What keeps you in Sioux Falls?
Work and family. My husband and I also own a small construction company and a rental property company in town.
What’s your favorite thing about your job?
I would definitely have to say my clients. I enjoy getting to know who they are beyond just insurance and helping them protect their most valuable assets.
How did you get connected to your industry?
Honestly, by chance. I applied for an entry-level position with a company in town and never looked back. I learned quickly that there are many opportunities within the insurance industry to grow and create your own path for a long-term career. I continuously work to grow my knowledge base through continuing education, earning designations and learning from every interaction I have with both clients and colleagues.
Describe Marsh McLennan in three words.
Family, collaborative and innovative.
What is something someone might be surprised to learn about you?
A lot of people tend to look a little shocked when I tell them my husband and I have five kids combined, we own and operate two small businesses, and I work full time outside of the home.
What’s your favorite way to give back to your community?
I like to partake in volunteer opportunities around the community. I am also a United Way Heart Club member.
What’s one business you’d like to see in Sioux Falls that isn’t here now?
An indoor water/amusement park.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
I hope to be in a management or leadership role at MMA.
