This week’s Up-and-Comer is Dylan Shaw, an audit manager at Eide Bailly LLP.

Name: Dylan Shaw

Age: 27

Hometown: Roslyn

What brought you to Sioux Falls?

All of the opportunities and the growing business community. Sioux Falls also seemed like the perfect-size town – not too big where you’re stuck in traffic for hours but large enough to have amenities without having to go far.

What keeps you in Sioux Falls?

Basically, the same reasons I had moved here. I have established a career here, I’m in close proximity to my family and friends, and all of the amenities. It’s hard to think of a better place to live that would suit the needs of my family.

What’s your favorite thing about your job?

The people. I might be biased, but I truly believe I work with some of the greatest people in Sioux Falls. I’m constantly amazed by how smart everyone is that I work with and how willing they are to share their knowledge. I get to learn something new each day, whether that be from a partner, an intern or a client. I also love connecting with clients and getting to know what is important to them and their business.

How did you get connected to your industry?

It all started back in high school when one of my favorite teachers encouraged me to take her accounting class, which I enjoyed. I went to college unsure if I wanted to pursue a career in accounting until one of my professors pushed me to take more of her accounting classes, and I eventually decided accounting was the path I wanted to take. I did an internship with Eide Bailly my junior year of college and never looked back!

Describe your workplace in three words.

Collaborative, supportive, passionate.

What is something someone might be surprised to learn about you?

I grew up on a farm in northeast South Dakota. I used to help my dad and grandpa with just about everything on the farm growing up and even through college. Going back to help my family with various tasks is one of my favorite things to do because it brings me back to my childhood and all of the great memories shared with my dad and grandpa.

What’s your favorite way to give back to your community?

I started doing Junior Achievement my first year working full time and have done it every year since. It’s so rewarding getting to teach the kids about business and watch how excited they are to learn. I give lots of credit to all the teachers because I’m exhausted always after each session!

What’s one business you’d like to see in Sioux Falls that isn’t here now?

Hands down, I’d like a Trader Joe’s.

If you had $1 million to start a business, what kind of business would it be?

Being mildly obsessed with my dog, I would start a doggy day care so I could hang out with her all day.
