Don’t let cataracts limit you

When you have cataracts, the glare of oncoming headlights at night can be blinding.

And that’s not all Rumi Weigel was experiencing. The 67-year-old Elk Point resident also was being told repeatedly by her husband that clothes she was certain were navy were actually black. Reading was becoming harder than ever. And her depth perception? Unreliable, particularly on stairs, which she tapped repeatedly with her toes to ensure it was safe before proceeding.

“I didn’t realize how bad my sight had gotten,” she said. “It’s such a gradual decline over the years.”

Last October, Rumi’s local optometrist suggested that because her cataracts had worsened to the point they were noticeably affecting her daily life, it was time for surgery. After a stint with a stronger set of prescription glasses and a second opinion, she agreed to the surgery.

“My doctor referred me to Vance Thompson Vision, and they immediately sent me a packet with pictures of the surgeon and other doctors who’d be taking care of me. It made the whole thing less daunting,” she explained.

In April, Rumi’s surgeon corrected her right eye on a Wednesday and her left the following day.

“It was like seeing for the first time!” she said. “The colors were all so clear and bright; the lines were so distinct. It’s so wonderful! I couldn’t believe I’d gone that long without truly seeing.”

Three months’ post-procedure, Rumi’s new vision has made her work at the Union County Courthouse easier and given her more confidence moving through her day.

“I just can’t say enough good things about Vance Thompson Vision. Everybody was so courteous. I called several times with questions, and they answered them all. One time, the gal I talked to didn’t have an answer, so she had the doctor call, and he did immediately. I am very pleased with the care I received.”
