The city of Sioux Falls issued building permits for the largest two projects of 2019 in August, but construction activity still seems to be slowing year-over-year.

Permits totaled $488.4 million through August, down from $576.2 million in 2018 and $494 million two years ago.

New commercial construction totaled $179.3 million through August, down from $225 million a year ago.

Permits issued for large projects in August included the two largest so far in 2019: Ben Reifel Middle School at $27.8 million and the city’s main pump station at 1900 N. Bahnson Ave., valued at $22.3 million.

The Sioux Falls Regional Airport has a building permit for a rental car turnaround facility valued at $2.7 million. The permit for the new Casey’s General Store at 57th Street and Nevada Avenue came in at $1.2 million.

New residential construction at $143.5 million is behind last year’s $151.2 million. That represents 434 new single-family homes, down from 493 homes the year before and 545 homes two years ago.
