Couple to bring heritage of Guatemalan bakeries to city’s east side

Dec. 17, 2025

A couple who learned how to bake Guatemalan breads and pastries from relatives is opening a bakery and cafe on the east side of Sioux Falls.

Miguel and Magdalena Jimenez’s La Huehueteca Bakery & Cafe will be in a retail center at 2400 E. Sixth St.

The space is being built out now, with hopes of opening in mid-January or early February, Miguel Jimenez said.

Both of them grew up in Huehuetenango, Guatemala, but they didn’t meet until they had moved to the United States. “Huehueteca” means “the woman from Huehuetenango,” he said.

Jimenez’s grandmother and uncle had bakeries in Guatemala, and he helped his uncle “a little bit.”

“My wife has more knowledge than I in baking goods,” he said. “She started helping in her family’s bakery when she was a kid.”

The cafe will feature sandwiches like roast beef and chicken, and will serve Guatemalan coffee.

“We found a supplier that brings coffee from the same hometown,” he said. “We are excited about that too.”

They’ll also serve empanadas, which are Jimenez’s favorite, with fillings like pineapple or sweet potato, he said.

The bakery will begin with a focus on breads and will add variety as the couple becomes accustomed to the space, he said. Both of them will work there full time.

There will be cookies, cakes and cupcakes, and customers will be able to special order items.

Hours will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday through Friday. Saturday is church day for the family, he said.
