While at the University of South Dakota, Joshua Henderson garnered an extensive background in computer science; however, it is the skills he learned outside of the classroom that have proven to be the difference in his work providing clients with data-driven solutions.

Not only did Henderson earn his bachelor’s degree in 2022 and master’s degree this year in computer science with an AI specialization with the highest honors, but also he managed that while serving in leadership positions in organizations ranging from Code Club to Ultimate Frisbee.

Henderson now brings those leadership skills to his work with clients at the Sioux Falls software engineering firm Omnitech Inc. As a software and data engineer, he helps professionals solve problems and improve their business by providing software and data solutions.

“Problem-solving, teamwork and time management are skills that are paramount in software and data development,” Henderson said. “I developed problem-solving skills through the classes and student organizations at USD. Being able to lead many student organizations in my time at USD also helped me to learn the value of teamwork, as well as the challenges that come with leadership and balancing several different projects and teams.”

Working in the fast-evolving field of data science means Henderson and his colleagues are challenged to keep up with the latest advancements.

“That is the most exciting thing to me,” he said. “What we thought the future would look like five years ago or even a year ago is different from what we think it will look like now. Every day, we are learning more, and there is research being done that could uncover the next large breakthrough in AI and data science.”

At Omnitech, Henderson sees the varied solutions AI can give companies.

“There is no one-size-fits-all solution that can plug into every business and solve every problem,” Henderson said. “It’s interesting to be able to see the variety in how AI is being used and can be used in the future to improve elements of each unique business.”
