Here’s a look at recent changes in the business landscape in the Sioux Falls area.

Two restaurants in the Jones421 Building are getting ready to relocate. Swamp Daddy’s Cajun Kitchen is closed while it makes the move into a larger space in the marketplace at 421 N. Phillips Ave. The last day for Papa Woody’s Wood Fired Pizza in the building will be Saturday. It’s moving farther north on Phillips to The Cascade. It hopes to reopen Feb. 14.

Edina Realty, the largest residential real estate firm in Minnesota and western Wisconsin, has acquired Hegg Realtors. The South Dakota company, which was founded in 1945 and has offices in Sioux Falls and Rapid City with more than 200 agents, will maintain its local brand as Hegg Realtors, an Edina Realty company.

First State Bank Southwest is building its first South Dakota branch in Sioux Falls. The Worthington, Minnesota, bank has had a loan production office in the city since 2018 and has been focused on growing to the point of establishing its first full-service branch. It’s under construction at 57th Street and Graystone Avenue and is expected to open in the third quarter.

Boss’ Pizzeria & Sports Bar has opened in Tea in the former Tea Steak House. In addition to the dining room, there are separate bar and casino areas. In addition to pizza, the menu includes broasted chicken, pasta dishes, sandwiches, burgers and appetizers. Hours are 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. daily, with weekend breakfast hours to come. Boss’ also took over the Tea Event Center and has moved its comedy club from the Ramada location to there.

Bricks & Minifigs, a franchise shop that sells new, pre-owned and collectible Legos, is coming to Sioux Falls. The certified Lego retailer will be in a strip mall on the northeast corner of 41st and Kiwanis and is expected to open in early summer.

Sir by Vanessen’s has opened in the East Bank Depot at 430 E. Eighth St. It’s described as a luxury barber spa. In addition to traditional services, it offers manicures, pedicures, waxing and facials.

Sanford Health has sold its Profile by Sanford business to North Carolina-based Ten Oaks Group, a family office investment firm.  The health system opened the first Profile weigh-management store in Sioux Falls in 2012. In the following decade, it grew to 150 locations nationwide with 70 franchisee owners. Its website shows 98 locations currently open.

A new business, Autonaps, offers climate-controlled storage for vehicles and motorcycles. The brand-new facility is in Sioux Falls at an undisclosed location for security, owner Kelly Olivier said. The service includes maintaining vehicle batteries.

Brookings-based Mills Property Management has expanded to the Sioux Falls area with management of town homes in east Sioux Falls and apartments in Dell Rapids and Canton. It plans to open an office here once its management portfolio grows more.

Four businesses in The Empire Mall are closing.

  • Yankee Candle closed Jan. 15.
  • PacSun’s final day is today.
  • Utah-based Bohme Boutique has been in the mall for 10 years. The last day is Saturday.
  • Locally owned G&M Braiding Studio plans to close at the end of the month. Braiding services are still available at the G&M Beauty Plus shop at 1513 E. 10th St. G&M Beauty Plus also has a separate supply shop in the mall, and that’s staying open.

The owners of The Attic Bar & Grill are opening a restaurant in Brandon. It will be next to Arby’s in a retail center on Splitrock Boulevard and is expected to open in spring.

Locally owned Kidtopia is closing one of two locations in Sioux Falls. The final day for the toy store at The Bridges at 57th is Wednesday. The east-side Dawley Farm Village site will remain open.

Renner Corner Meats is planning to expand with a new building for the production of beef jerky. While the locker along Highway 115 north of Sioux Falls has been making jerky since 1969, it created packaging and began selling it online and through other retailers across South Dakota last year. The new building will be on land to the northwest of the business, which includes a gas station and convenience store.

Ondrea Stachel is the new owner of boutique TH Grey. She is the third owner for the business, which started as an online shop in 2016 and moved into its storefront in at 330 S. Phillips Ave. in 2017.

Athena Fibers at 3915 S. Hawthorne Ave. has closed. The yarn shop had been in business since 2005.

Garage Living has moved from 1312 W. 41st St. to a retail center at 3504 S. Minnesota Ave. The new location has a similar-sized showroom but also includes the warehouse, which had been off-site before, owner Jim Kadoun said.
