Here’s a look at recent changes in the business landscape in the Sioux Falls area.

Accounting firms Woltman Group PC and Lamfers & Maas LLP have merged. Eric Maas and his staff have joined Woltman Group, and clients of both firms will continue to work with the same team members. Woltman Group serves thousands of business and individual clients throughout the Upper Midwest. The team provides a  variety of personalized business advisory services in addition to a full line of traditional accounting and tax services. In addition to the Sioux Falls office at 70001 S. Lyncrest Place, Woltman Group has offices in Marion and Aberdeen.

Furniture Mission of South Dakota has purchased land and will be the final nonprofit organization joining the Empower Campus along East 10th Street. The organization at 209 N. Nesmith Ave. provides gently used furniture and household items to those who have been referred by a social service agency, school, church or hospital. The timeline for construction will depend on fundraising, but the project has been selected for a chamber appeal campaign in the spring of 2022.

Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers is planning a second Sioux Falls location that’s targeted for an opening in April 2022. The restaurant will build on land south of Burger King on The Empire Mall campus. Freddy’s also is under construction at Dawley Farm Village on the east side of Sioux Falls and on track to open in mid-January.

A new event barn on the east side of Sioux Falls offers a picturesque setting overlooking the Big Sioux River. Riverview Barn opened in late August along Highway 42 and has been hosting weddings, other gatherings and even a concert. It can hold 330 people on the main floor, and there’s space for outdoor wedding ceremonies that can seat up to 340 guests. Owners Pam and Bryan Hedman offer a flat rate for weddings.

Dollar Fresh stores have opened in Harrisburg and Tea. It’s a newer concept from Hy-Vee Inc. that features grocery store staples and other merchandise such as apparel and cosmetics at lower prices. The stores are open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

Sanford Health and Lewis Drug are planning new locations in northeast Sioux Falls. The development is slated for more than 12 acres at the northwest corner of Madison Street and Veterans Parkway. Sanford currently is planning a 16,000-square-foot, single-story multidisciplinary clinic with family medicine, women’s, pediatric and therapy services along with a lab and radiology. The Lewis Drug on the site will include a pharmacy and be comparable to those the retailer has built alongside other Sanford locations. A timeline for construction is expected to be announced next year.

Nyberg’s Ace Hardware has moved Dakota Workwear out of its store at 41st Street and Minnesota Avenue and into its own storefront. The 7,000-square-foot space at 3138 S. Minnesota Ave. allows for expanded inventory of Carhartt apparel, including a women’s line. It’s open daily.

A Kansas-based chicken restaurant is expanding to Sioux Falls. Franchisees Brad and Max “Bubba” Reinke of BubbaMax LLC are planning to open three Chick N Max restaurants but they haven’t selected locations yet.  Chick N Max is touted as the home of “The Better Chicken Sandwich.” It specializes in almond wood-smoked chicken and wings, chef-crafted sandwiches and fried tenders.

The new nonprofit Dakota Institute is bringing a new source for economic and business intelligence to the state. It’s a private applied business and economic analytical and modeling enterprise meant to serve public and private decision-makers in South Dakota and across the region. Founding board members Michael Bender, David Chicoine, Van Fishback and Rob Oliver have pledged the resources to fund the institute for three to five years while it becomes a self-sustaining nonprofit.

R Wine Bar & Kitchen has acquired Skajewski Catering, rebranding it as R Catering. Chef Nicholas Skajewski has joined R Wine Bar as culinary director.

A traditional Japanese teppanyaki restaurant with a sushi bar has opened at 3217 S. Sertoma Ave. Samurai Tasteas is open daily. The menu is filled with Japanese specialties, including the featured teppanyaki fajita served on a sizzling plate. Owner Chunxing Pan also has Tasteas, which serves boba teas, other drinks, bubble waffles and Thai rolled ice cream, on West 41st Street.

Selfie Wrld is closing in The Empire Mall. The business, which provides backdrops for photographs, hasn’t announced a final date.

Boss’ Pizza & Chicken is buying the Tea Steak House from its retiring owners and planning to turn it into a pizzeria and sports bar with a focus on Tea Area High School athletics. Boss’ owner Jeremy Seefeldt said the new name will be Boss’ Pizzeria & Sports Bar, and it will be similar to the concept that’s in the Ramada hotel in Sioux Falls near the Denny Sanford Premier Center. The final day for the steakhouse is Nov. 20. Seefeldt said he hopes to be open by Dec. 10. The sale includes O’Toole’s Bar and the Tea Events Center, both of which will keep their names.

Wendy’s at 41st Street and Louise Avenue has closed. Two locations remain in Sioux Falls, one on West 12th Street and the newest one at Dawley Farm Village, which opened earlier this year.

Nearly 50 local makers are selling their work as part of the annual Art Moms holiday pop-up. That’s more than ever for the shop, which is located at 3101 W. 41st St. next to Plato’s Closet and Olive Garden. It’s open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the following dates: Nov. 18-20, 26-27 and Dec. 2-4, 9-11, 16-18.

Wisconsin-based Kwik Trip is expanding into South Dakota with its first convenience store in Brandon and likely more locations to come in the Sioux Falls area. The family-owned company is buying land on the northwest corner of Holly Boulevard and Heritage Road on the west side of town, said Wade Dumond, Kwik Trip’s real estate development manager. The purchase hasn’t closed yet, so there’s no timeline for construction. The store will be a Kwik Star, the brand name used in Iowa. Locations in Wisconsin and Minnesota go by the original name.

Sioux Falls-based Alternative HR LLC has expanded to Minnesota. Staff member Sarah Meusburger relocated there to provide human resource consulting services in another state.
