Here’s a look at recent changes in the business landscape in the Sioux Falls area.

Construction has started on a 300,000-square-foot addition to Furniture Mart USA’s  headquarters at 140 E. Hinks Lane in north-central Sioux Falls. The building will double in size, adding Ashley HomeStore and Furniture Mart locations, along with a clearance center and more warehouse space. Completion is scheduled for the first quarter of 2022.

Fuzziwig’s Candy’s Factory has opened in Scheels, offering a big variety of candies and chocolates. The Colorado-based company has added stores-within-a-store at several Scheels locations.

Wholestone Farms, an entity owned by regional pork producers, plans to build a more than $500 million pork processing facility at I-229 and Benson Road. Assuming necessary permits are granted and construction stays on track, the plant would open in 2025 and initially employ more than 1,100 people. Wholestone, which also operates a plant in Fremont, Neb., is proposing a facility that initially would process 3 million hogs annually on an eight-hour shift.

Hudson-based Eparts, an e-commerce business that sells aftermarket spare parts primarily for farm equipment, plans to build a 100,000-square-foot distribution center in an industrial park planned near I-29 and Highway 18. The timeline for construction is uncertain.

The first location that started the family-owned chain of Giliberto’s Mexican Taco Shops is moving next door. The restaurant at 712 S. Minnesota Ave. has leased the former Wendy’s building. The move will provide a drive-thru, more parking and a bigger kitchen. Remodeling work is expected to take eight to 10 weeks.

Avera has broken ground on a $34 million family health center at 26th and Veterans Parkway. The three-story, 86,000-square-foot building will be similar to its west-side center near 26th and Marion Road. Services will include an emergency department, as well as laboratory and imaging services, including CT, X-ray and ultrasound. Other services will include family medicine, urgent care, obstetrics/gynecology, pediatrics, internal medicine and dermatology. The east-side location will be able to accommodate up to 40 providers and is expected to open in early 2023.

Hy-Vee Inc. is getting into the financial services industry. The grocer has launched Hy-Vee Financial Services in partnership with subsidiary Midwest Heritage. Enrolled customers will have access to financial services, including checking and savings accounts, auto and home insurance, home mortgages, consumer loans and pet insurance.

Mike and Nikki Brown of Sioux Falls have opened Paradise Patio, Pool & Spa in a retail center at 41st Street and Grange Avenue. The business offers pool and spa design, construction and remodeling along with backyard services drawing on the team’s years of experience in landscaping and sprinkler installation.

London-based CNH Industrial has entered into an agreement to acquire Raven Industries. In a statement the companies said the acquisition builds on a long partnership and “will further enhance CNH Industrial’s position in the global agriculture equipment market by adding strong innovation capabilities in autonomous and precision agriculture technology.” The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter.

Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers is coming to Sioux Falls. The Kansas-based restaurant chain plans to open late this fall at Dawley Farm Village.

Silverstar Car Wash is planning to build its 10th Sioux Falls location on the northeast corner of 41st Street and Ellis Road. It’s expected to open in the Westown Marketplace, which includes Fareway and Dollar Tree, by the end of the year.

The Deku Tree, which sells hard-to-find succulents and cacti, will host a grand opening July 3 and 4 in its new location in the Jones421 Building on Phillips Avenue between Fifth and Sixth streets. Owner Joshua Cooper started the business in his Humboldt garage in early 2020.

Reliabank is expanding into Colton with its 10th location. The branch will be in a former U.S. Bank building and will add a drive-up banking lane. It’s expected to open this fall.

Crawford’s Bar & Grill has new owners. They will keep the restaurant’s name and anticipate some small menu adjustments but nothing major, said Paul Ode, who owns it with his four brothers. David and Tonya Graham owned the downtown business for a decade.

Rudy Navarrete’s Taco Bus is up and running in the Sioux Falls area and northwest Iowa. The menu is a condensed version of what he served at Rudy M. Navarrete’s Tex-Mexican Restaurant, which closed in March 2020. Since then, he has been operating as a catering business. He keeps his Facebook page updated as events are booked.

Augustana University has moved its admission and financial aid offices across the street into Sioux Falls Seminary’s building. The newly named University Welcome Center is at 2100 S. Summit Ave.

Encompass Mental Health is planning to build a clinic at 1110 E. 77th St. The practice was founded seven years ago by marriage and family therapist Emily Learing and currently operates out of an office suite at 5000 S. Minnesota Ave. Encompass’ typical patient groups include children younger than 10, teens and adult women.

Home-based business Lili Berries is closing at the end of the month. Owner Ryanna Sandoval started her business selling decorated chocolate-covered strawberries as an outlet to manage her postpartum depression. Now, she has a toddler who needs her attention more than her business.

Nearly four years after opening, CrossFit Viable has expanded into a new, bigger location. Owner Benjamin Swan started the fitness center on the west side and recently moved it into a 4,000-square-foot space at 4000 S. Hawthorne Ave.

Sioux Empire Federal Credit Union has changed its name to Bluestone Federal Credit Union. It was chartered in 1938 to offer financial services to employees of the city of Sioux Falls. Membership has grown to include anyone who lives, works, worships or attends school in Minnehaha, Lincoln, McCook or Turner counties.

Crist & Wenande Orthodontics has changed its name to Journey Orthodontics. Orthodontists B. Scott Wenande and Brian Hohlen see patients in three Sioux Falls locations and one in Yankton.
