City is $2M shy of breaking annual construction record

With two months to go, construction activity in Sioux Falls is less than $2 million shy of breaking last year’s record.

The city has issued permits worth $917.8 million through October, compared with the 2020 total of $919.6 million. At this time a year ago, the total construction value was $573.2 million.

Through October, new residential permits totaled $272.2 million, up from $211.8 million a year ago. That includes 782 new single-family houses so far this year, an increase of 147 from a year ago.

Residential remodeling and additions also are outpacing 2020 at $61.5 million, compared with $55.5 million.

Multifamily construction, which is considered commercial construction, slowed in October with just three units added, but at 1,595 units so far this year, it’s still far above 1,052 from a year ago.

The permit value for new commercial construction reached $343.8 million, with apartments accounting for $204.1 million of it. The total compares with $204.7 million through October 2020.

Commercial additions and renovations are at $240.3 million, compared with $101.2 million last year.
