Nov. 2, 2023

It looks like Sioux Falls building activity is on pace for its second-best year ever.

Through October, permits totaled $964.2 million, up from $917.8 million in 2021 but still a long way from the $1.77 billion permit value issued for the same time in 2022 — the record year.

New commercial activity totaled $500.1 million for the first 10 months of the year, about half of what it was last year but up from $343.8 million in 2021. Commercial additions and remodeling projects totaled $205.6 million, down from $326 million last year and $240.3 million two years ago.

New residential construction continues to lag behind previous years at $168.9 million, compared with $231.6 million last year and $272.2 million two years ago. The city has issued permits for 381 new single-family homes this year, compared with 612 this time last year and 782 two years ago.

There have been 1,563 multifamily units, nearly identical to 1,595 in 2021 but down from 3,255 last year.

Residential remodeling at $89.7 million is behind last year’s $123.6 million and ahead of $61.5 million in 2021.

Large projects permitted in October include a a shell warehouse for the future space shared by Avera Health and Owens & Minor at Foundation Park at $25.6 million and the two-story building that will kick off the USD Discovery District at 4600 W. Nobel St., along with the Jacobson Plaza project at Falls Park West for $11.4 million.
