It’s not an April Fool’s Day joke: City building permits really did double year-over-year through the first quarter.

Permit valuation totaled $376.2 million, up from $212.9 million last year and $103.7 million in the first quarter of 2020.

The category that includes office, institutional and educational climbed to $142.1 million, compared with $4.6 million a year ago. For March, that includes $46.7 million for a 10-story office and condo building at Cherapa Place and a $28.9 office building at The Steel District.

Apartment projects also surged in March and now total $97.6 million for the first quarter, compared with $51.7 million a year ago. Permits have been issued for 934 units, compared with 463 in the first quarter of 2021.

The Stadium Crossing project at 69th Street and Cliff Avenue includes 258 units in four buildings with a clubhouse for $28.1 million. The Silos at Ellis Crossing on West 41st Street has 108 units in three buildings for $11.4 million. Other major multifamily projects getting underway are at PowderHaus Apartments at Veterans Parkway and 41st Street and The Marq on West 69th Street near Tallgrass Avenue.

New residential construction is slightly behind a year ago. So far this year, $58.1 million in permits has been issued, compared with $61.7 million a year. That includes 183 single-family units, compared with 187 at the same time last year.
