City building activity inches toward $2B
Dec. 1, 2022
Permits for a few large projects were issued in November, but overall building activity continued its pattern of slowing to end the year.
Through November, the valuation of permits totaled $1.84 billion, up from $1.77 billion through October, which showed a similar increase from September.
At that pace, the city likely won’t surpass $2 billion in building activity for the year, although it will still break a record by a large margin.
For comparison, permits through November of last year totaled just over $1 billion.
Permits for large projects issued in the past month include a building at Foundation Park for Scherer Inc. and build-outs for offices at Cherapa Place, including The Bancorp and Eide Bailly at $15.1 million.
Overall new commercial construction continues to reach historic levels in Sioux Falls. It totals $1.1 billion so far this year, up from $408.1 million last year.
Commercial additions and remodeling projects total $331.8 million, up from $250.1 million in 2021.
New residential construction continues to lag at $237.2 million, compared with $289.7 million last year. That represents 633 new single-family homes, compared with 819 for the same time last year.
Residential additions and remodeling projects have doubled at $130.6 million, compared with $67.4 million last year.
Permits have been issued for 3,255 multifamily units, up from 1,739 last year.
The city’s year-end building numbers will be released in late January.
