Cimpl’s LLC plans to close its operation in Yankton, cutting a reported 277 jobs.

The company is part of the fresh meats division of American Foods Group, one of the United States’ largest privately held meat processing companies.

In a statement, the company pointed to the “unprecedented cattle cycle and long-term industry changes” as reasons for stopping its harvest operation in South Dakota.

The final day of operations was March 15.

“We made the tough decision to idle harvest operations at our Cimpl’s facility, affecting over 250 employees,” said Louie Kohlbeck, president of American Foods Group’s fresh meats division. “We recognize the profound impact this has on our team members, their families and the community. Our top priority is supporting those affected during this transition. This week, team members from our other locations are on-site to provide guidance and discuss relocation opportunities.”

Next week, the South Dakota Department of Labor and Regulation, in collaboration with Yankton Thrive and community partners, will hold a community job and resources fair from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at  the National Field Archery Association headquarters at 800 Archery Lane in Yankton.

Rapid Response informational meetings are scheduled at 9 and 11 a.m. to provide layoff assistance and guidance. The Department of Labor will explain the process of applying for reemployment assistance benefits and provide resources to find new employment or training opportunities. Translation services will be available.

Yankton has almost 600 job openings and an unemployment rate of 1.8 percent, according to the state.
