Carpenter Bar Group to open downtown event venue

The owners of Carpenter Bar, The Treasury and Highball will offer a new downtown event venue later this year.

Monick Yards will be in the building of a former pipe supply company, Monick Pipe, on East Eighth Street just east of the 8th & Railroad Center.

“We’re keeping the history of the name and turning it into a beautiful event hall,” co-owner Anne Haber said.

“The beauty of this is that you can have everything here: the bridal suites, space for the ceremony, and for corporate events, there’s great technology and seating options.”

The owners of event venues Convolo and the newly opened Casetta will be partners in Monick Yards and manage the venue.

“Venues are taking off, but downtown is relatively untouched mainly because space is hard to find,” co-owner Angela Merritt said. “And yet downtown is where a lot of weddings want to be. We’ve been to weddings at venues outside of Sioux Falls, and everyone is trying to figure out how to get downtown later in the evening.”

Monick Yards will be a “really good fit” to their portfolio of venues, she added.

“We tried to bring a little different aesthetic to Sioux Falls and something that is unique and versatile,” co-owner Amy Boes said. “With Anne, knowing the quality of her group’s bars, we knew the standard of design would be there and fit perfectly with what we’re trying to do. And we understand how events flow and the kind of communication they need, so we’re really excited to be working together.”

Here’s a look at the aesthetic planned for the interior:

Monick Yards will offer two defined spaces and be able to accommodate up to 400 guests for a sit-down event, in addition to a patio.

“The interior can be one big space or two smaller ones,” Haber said. “And there will be two bar areas in the space, with mobile bar options. We will provide beautiful wood tables and lovely furnishings with the rentals, or you can bring in your own things. We hope to work with different event planners to host a variety of events and functions.”

In addition to weddings, the 12,000-square-foot space is a fit for corporate events, trade shows, showers or rehearsal dinners.

“We’re very excited to bring another industrial venue to the Sioux Falls market,” said Boes, who gained experience with such venues in the Twin Cities and got married at a similar one. “And we know there’s demand. There aren’t enough Saturdays in the month for most venues already, and this one is going to offer a completely unique experience with its downtown setting.”

There’s so much need for space, many brides already are booking into 2024, the owners said. Monick Yards plans to be open in late summer this year.

“We’ve been surprised how many people were open to booking early at our other venues before they were open, and we expect we’ll find the same here,” Merritt said.

Monick Yards will work with a number of selected caters and preferred vendors to ensure both quality and consistency of experience as well as a range of options for guests.

“I think the credibility of The Carpenter Bar Group’s experience in the cocktail scene brings a whole added element,” Boes said. “I would be extremely excited if the people behind their bars were assisting with the drinks for my wedding.”

Construction is coming along well, Haber said.

“It’s completely gutted, the wood is being prepped for the ceiling, and we’re waiting on some final plans to begin the build-out,” she said. “As we’ve seen with our family’s Cherapa and Railyard Flats developments, we just love the momentum pulling east downtown. And we feel Monick Yards is a complement to all the other activities and investments we’re made there.”
