B&G Milkyway stores compete for Avalanche title

July 31, 2024

From Hot Tamale to Caramel Corn Craze, Avalanche flavors at B&G Milkyway are going creatively competitive in August.

Each of the nine locations in the Sioux Falls area has created an entry for the inaugural Avalanche Battle.

“Each location was allowed to think outside the box,” said Alex Bettmeng, the daughter of Bruce and Pam Bettmeng who own the West 12th Street and West 41st Street locations. “It doesn’t have to be things we already have in the store; most came up with things we don’t usually carry.”

Here are the flavors that will be available Aug. 1-31:

  • 12th Street: Hot Tamale
  • 41st Street: Chocolate Chip Pancake
  • 69th & Louise: Caramel Corn Craze
  • Harmodon Park: Blueberry Muffin
  • Sycamore Avenue: Salted Nut Roll
  • 69th & Cliff: Mr. Beast Peanut Butter Feastables
  • Tea: Churro
  • Brandon: Cinnamon Pretzel
  • Harrisburg: Frosted Animal Cracker

“August is one of those months where we’re starting to wind down a bit, starting to get ready to go back to school,” said Bettmeng, who works at the two stores her family owns. “This will be a nice treat for families before their lives go back to normal.”

Customers will vote for their favorite Avalanche through a Facebook poll. The winning location will be announced Sept. 1 and will get a “champion” sign to hang in the store window.

B&G is offering an incentive to try all nine. Customers can pick up a card when they buy the first Avalanche and have it stamped each time they try a different flavor. Once they eat all nine, they can turn in the card for a free small Avalanche of their choice at any location through Aug. 31.

Bettmeng anticipates the Avalanche Battle becoming an annual contest.

“Some locations already have an idea of what they want to do next year.”
