When Spencer Imus isn’t working with clients at Luxury Auto Mall, he’s likely learning more about the vehicles they might want to drive.

“I probably spend at least an hour a day reading online, looking at car magazines, spending time in the vehicles,” said Imus, a sales consultant for Mercedes-Benz and client adviser for BMW.

“Technology in vehicles changes so much, so I do a lot of reading and studying and hands-on time just to make sure I’m on top of everything – the changes and improvements and applications.”

Imus has put that knowledge to work for 13 years in the luxury-vehicle industry, including the past nine at Luxury Auto Mall. Master-certified by Mercedes in 2010, he went into management for a time and was named in about the top two dozen Mercedes managers nationwide in 2015.

But Imus prefers working with people to working at a desk, so he went back into client advising two years ago.

“Every day is different,” he said. “It’s a good company to work for, and I like how open we are with our pricing. We’re very straightforward. We offer the best price upfront, which then allows me to really get to know as much about the customer as I can and how they’re planning to use the vehicle so I can provide the best solution.”

For almost a decade, Imus has helped connect Dr. Walter Carlson and his family with vehicles and services that meet their needs.

“He’s been very attentive and just provides you with information. He’ll research and give you the pros and cons. Sometimes these cars will have a newer model or version, and he could not tell me that and just sell what he has, but he will point that out,” Carlson said.

“And sometimes I’ll say I want this option or that, and he will ask if I really do because it affects my ride or the performance of the car. He’s even talked me out of doing something with the car I wouldn’t have needed in the first place.”

Imus also has helped connect him with everything from new tires to a quick oil change, he said.

“He’s always honest and gives credit to his co-workers, and you don’t get a sense they’re trying to undercut one another. You feel like they’re really working as a team. To be honest, I’m at the point where I wouldn’t be able to buy a car from anyone else.”

And when it does come time to buy, “I just ask for the best possible price, and I never felt I had to wheel and deal. I just felt very comfortable,” Carlson said. “I’ve been treated so fairly by him and the people at Luxury Auto Mall that we’re very loyal customers.”

Imus has built that loyalty among others too. He works with clients in the Sioux Falls area and nationwide, including many long-time relationships.

“I’ve worked with them long enough and built strong-enough relationships where I’m getting calls for their children needing cars, and that’s probably the best part,” he said.

Here’s more from Imus in his own words.

How would you describe your approach to working with customers?

I’m pretty informative, direct and open. You’re not going to find a one-line close from me.

What’s your favorite vehicle of the moment?

In Mercedes, it would have to be the G-Class SUV, sometimes called the G-Wagen. It’s just super exclusive, completely redesigned from the ground up, and it’s just a unique vehicle. You don’t see many of them.

In BMW, it would have to be the X7. It’s all new, redesigned and a seven-passenger vehicle that’s just awesome. It’s quiet and handles really well.

What’s the best part about your job?

Just seeing the excitement in customers’ eyes when they get something they probably worked very hard for. And I like how the industry is constantly changing, so it brings new excitement every day.
