Airport shuts down again as closures mount during winter storm

Jan. 3, 2022

The Sioux Falls Regional Airport has shut down for the second time in two weeks because of winter weather.

The airport closed at 1 a.m. today and at this point plans to reopen at 9 a.m. Wednesday. In a social media post, it said crews are on hand and will be working through the night to reopen. Check with your airline for flight updates.

Interstate 90 from the Marion Road exit in Sioux Falls to Chamberlain remains closed because of the extent of the snow accumulation and multiple stranded vehicles. Interstate 29 has reopened.

It’s one of multiple closures in the area because of the latest round of winter weather. Others include the Minnehaha County Administration Building and County Courthouse, Sioux Falls public libraries and the Washington Pavilion.

All Sanford Health Sioux Falls metro clinics will close at 1 p.m. Sanford 26th & Sycamore Acute Care Clinic will remain open until 9 p.m. tonight. All Sanford Health clinics in Sioux Falls will open at 10 a.m. on Jan. 4.  This includes clinics in Brandon, Harrisburg, Hartford and Lennox as well as adult and pediatric outpatient rehabilitation appointments.

Many Avera Health clinics also are closed or operating at different hours. You can check on the status of your local clinic on its closures page here. To reschedule an appointment, call your clinic when normal hours resume.

All scheduled wound care appointments, dialysis appointments, procedures, surgeries and diagnostic testing will go as scheduled, unless otherwise arranged by the patient’s provider.

A number of stores and restaurants also are closed, so check before venturing out — if you must. The Sioux Falls Police Department is advising no travel in the city until conditions improve.

Sioux Area Metro is suspending bus service “until further notice due to hazardous road conditions caused by inclement weather,” it said in a statement. “Officials will continue to monitor weather and roads throughout the day and resume service when conditions improve.”
