This week’s Up-and-Comer is Adam Cooper, a sales executive at Howalt+McDowell Insurance, a Marsh & McLennan Agency LLC company. He joined the firm in November 2015.
Name: Adam Cooper
Hometown: Sioux Falls
What brought you to Sioux Falls?
My parents. 🙂 I was born and raised here.
What keeps you in Sioux Falls?
Not only has this place blessed me early on with personal and professional success, it has become an even better place to raise my son. There are so many things to do in Sioux Falls at any given time that it’s hard to be bored! From the Washington Pavilion — I think I have more fun in the Kirby Science Discovery Center than my little boy — to just walking downtown and enjoying the sights.
What’s your favorite thing about your job?
Being able to provide risk management solutions that allow my clients to better control their insurance costs. I also love the flexibility. It enables me to be an engaged member of my community and give back every chance that I can. The organization has as strong a commitment to this community, as do I; that culture of volunteerism and philanthropy is very important to me.
How did you get connected to your industry?
At 20 years old, I was still in school and working retail at the mall. My store manager had taken a job with a life insurance company and would stop in every now and then. Eventually, I asked him to get me connected, and within a few months I was knocking on doors selling life insurance. During my first year, I had to deliver a claims check to a family who lost their father and spouse; that was the moment I knew this was the industry I wanted to give my professional commitment to.
Describe working at Howalt+McDowell Insurance in three words.
Invigorating, teamwork, creativity.
What’s one business you’d like to see in Sioux Falls that isn’t here now?
I have never been one to shy away from food. Even though we have a very robust restaurant scene here in Sioux Falls, we’re still missing some of those bigger name brands for both casual dining and fast food. I can’t tell you how many times Chick-fil-A cravings hit, but when they do, it’s almost worth the drive to Sioux City!
Where do you see yourself in five years?
Professionally, I hope to still be a valued team member of Howalt+McDowell Insurance and providing even more refined solutions to my clients as risks and exposures continue to change and/or develop. I will continue my commitment to being involved in this community and give back in more ways as my capacity evolves. By then, my son will be in school and getting involved in other activities, so it will be a busy and exciting time. Having a little brother or sister for him during that time span is another goal.
