Restaurant Roundup: Mother’s Day, peanut butter/smoked bacon ice cream, monthly features

Many restaurants in Sioux Falls and nearby towns are offering Mother’s Day buffets and featured menus. Here are a few free offerings we noticed.
- Sickies Garage Burgers & Brews: Moms eat for free.
- Blarney Stone Pub: Free slice of angel food cake with strawberries and whipped cream for moms and mothers-to-be.
- Blue Rock Bar & Grill: Free mimosa.
- Carnaval Brazilian Grill: Free glass of champagne and a $20 bonus card.
- MacKenzie River Pizza, Grill & Pub: Free appetizer for every table celebrating mom with a minimum $15 purchase, Saturday and Sunday.
- La Playita Mexican Seafood: Free pina colada, with or without alcohol.
- The Tavern Grill: Free glass of champagne.
- Union Social in Harrisburg: Free Limoncello cocktail or Frank’s homemade bagel; one hour of free bowling for families on a first come, first served basis.
The Smoked Culture BBQ & Brews and Katz Cream have collaborated on an ice cream flavor that will be available at least through the summer. Hunka Hunka features banana/peanut butter ice cream loaded with a buttered Wonderbread swirl, smoked hot honey bacon, chocolate chunks and a peanut butter ribbon. Co-owner Jess Jones said she’s looking forward to the possibility of other fun flavors in the future, praising ice cream maker Blaine Styles for his talents.

Sioux Valley Grille in Canton now features beef from 2Gather Meats of Alvord, Iowa. Cuts include New York strips, rib-eyes and T-bones. 2Gather Meats raises Charolais and Simmental cross cattle, and they’re fed a non-GMO, homegrown diet of grass hay and a fermented rye and grain.

The monthly special at The Dive is Dive Pops. They’re fried chicken in a waffle batter, served on a stick. Choose syrup or hot honey for dipping or drizzling.

Tailgators Grill & Bar in Brandon has new specials for May.


On Friday, the Tequila and Salsa Slam party will be held at The Meadow Barn at Country Orchards in Harrisburg. There will be live music, dancing, food and tequila. Breaking Burrito will offer a traditional street taco bar, and Taqueria Juanita will have a Mexican sweet corn elote bar. Mama Troll Salsas and Salas Salsas will have products for sampling and purchase. There will be dozens of craft tequilas for sampling and specialty cocktails. Codigo Tequila is one of the sponsors. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $109 for the full package or $44 for salsa, food and music, with a cash bar available. See event details and a link for tickets here.

The north-side taproom at the brewery for Fernson Brewing Co. is celebrating the return of summertime hours with a party Friday. Stop by from 4 to 8 p.m. for the full lineup of beer, wine and cocktails, the Salas Salsa food truck and games. New hours at the brewery taproom at 1400 E. Robur Drive are 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 3 to 9 p.m. Saturday.

And if you’re at Fernson Downtown, Totally Rad Eats has new specials.

M.I. Nuts Company in Canton is having a parking lot party from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 14, that will feature owner Michelle Oas’ food truck, Moe’s Concessions, live music, beanbag games and prizes. The menu will include Indian tacos, corn dogs, deep-fried Oreos and more. M.I. Nuts will be open, too, serving drinks, ice cream and other treats.

Here’s the lineup for Sioux Falls Food Co+op’s $5 community meal dinners, which are served from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays.

It’s strawberry season at Perkins. Returning favorites include pancakes, Crispers, the Strawberry Fields Salad, strawberry lemonade, pie and muffins.

Applebee’s has several new menu items, including Loaded Potato Waves, California Grilled Chicken Salad, Sesame Salmon Bowl, Lemon Parmesan Chicken and Strawberry Balsamic Chicken Salad.

The Steak & Onion Pizza is back on the menu for a limited time at Pizza Ranch.

The featured cupcake flavors for the month at Oh My Cupcakes are Tres Leches, Cookie Cutter, Old School, White Chocolate Raspberry, Sassy Classic and Better Than Summer. The raspberry and Sassy cupcakes also are available as gluten-friendly.

Cinnabon is featuring Harry Potter Butterbeer bons through May 17, or while supplies last. The Sioux Falls location, which is in the Flying J Travel Center, doesn’t carry drinks, so fans will miss out on the Butterbeer-flavored Chilatta.

Chocolate Tiramisu is available this month at Johnny Carino’s.

The new Koala T Cafe has added a catering option for self-serve boba drinks.

The newest featured drinks at The Breaks Coffee Roasting Co. are Barb Rosewater, a single-shot iced or hot latte featuring an organic rhubarb and rosewater simple syrup, and the Italian cream soda Labubu Berry with flavors of ube, wild blueberry and thyme.

Lava’s Coffee in Harrisburg has a menu full of featured drinks for May.

7 Brew Coffee has introduced six lemonades: Blackberry Cobbler Lemon Freeze, Fruit Roll-up Green Tea Lemonade, Tropic Thunder Lemonade Frozen Chiller, Heatwave 7 Energy, Lemon Drop 7 Fizz Soda and Pink Paradise.

La Plaza Fiesta is always coming up with new drinks, and the latest concoction is a soft-serve margarita. Flavors change frequently.

This month, Highball is featuring “Candyland” cocktails, based on favorite sweet treats. Collect the playing cards for each drink for a chance to win prizes. Sister bars also are participating. Carpenter Bar is featuring the Twin Bing Old Fashioned, and The Treasury is serving Pop, Drop and Roll with a chamoy fruit roll-up and Pop Rocks.

The restaurants and wine bar that are part of Vinyahd Restaurant Group are having another wine passport event. R Wine Bar & Kitchen, Maribella Ristorante and Brix Wine Bar are each featuring a different white wine from Italy. Buy all three glasses of wine sometime this month, get your passport stamps, and enjoy a fourth glass of your choice for free.

Chili’s Grill & Bar has a new twist on its monthly $6 featured margarita. The May version has popping boba in it.

Changes in hours, service
- Severance Brewing Co. has switched to summer hours: noon to 8 p.m. Sunday, 2 to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and noon to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
- Eileen’s Colossal Cookies is booked up for orders through May 16. The case will be stocked though with treats.
