For Denae Matherly, a family vacation turned into the start of a business.
That new business is The Good Stuff, a mobile coffee shop with the tagline Brewing Joy Daily.

Last summer, the family went on a road trip to the Tetons. Matherly had just left her job managing a coffee shop at a local church and didn’t have a plan for what was next. Bubbling in her brain, though, she said, was how much she loved making coffee drinks and crafting recipes and how much a mobile coffee shop was needed.
“My kids are in track and cross country, T-ball and all those things,” Matherly said. “I would go to an event and was always saying what would make it amazing is if I could go get a cup of coffee right here.”

So back to the vacation. A typical trip for the family involves a rough idea of where they are headed, with online searches for places to stay and “treasure hunts” at locations along the way.
That’s how they ended up at a garden center in Idaho where the business was selling an espresso machine after a failed attempt at operating a coffee shop at the greenhouse. Unsure about how to get the commercial-size machine home, Matherly said her husband told her, “We can make it fit.”
After that, the biggest find was a former carnival food trailer that was for sale in Wyoming. That meant a three-hour detour on the way home, but Matherly said her family was excited to help her fulfill her dream. A rancher helped them add a hitch to their vehicle so they could tow it home.
The Matherlys renovated the trailer, and she got her licenses to operate and started looking for a coffee bean roaster.

“I tried a bunch and did a blind taste test,” Matherly said, noting that she chose local roaster Parable Coffee Co.
The Good Stuff’s first day out was Oct. 15, and Matherly will operate year-round.
“My goal is to be out three to four times a week,” she said, adding that The Good Stuff likely will be out more in the summer.
The drink menu includes hot or iced lattes, drip coffee, Lotus energy drinks and Italian sodas.

For food, there are homemade caramel rolls and packaged egg bites. A hot chocolate bar is possible for private events, Matherly said.

She has been accepting invitations from businesses and other organizations to use their parking lots, and she even did a pop-up in her driveway last week.

The Good Stuff can travel to towns in the area and is taking bookings for public and private events.
