Restaurant Roundup: Avalanche Battle, Stuff Your Stanley, Indian taco fundraiser

The Avalanche Battle is back for a second year at B&G Milkyway locations. The 10 flavors were introduced Aug. 1 and will be available until Sept. 1. Voting will begin online Aug. 18. Get a stamp card at any location, try at least nine treats, and get a free small Avalanche. Here are the entries:

  • 12th Street: Chocolate Covered Pretzel
  • 41st Street: Samoa
  • 69th & Louise: White Chocolate Raspberry
  • Harmodon Park: Biscoff Blitz
  • Sycamore Avenue: Whoppers
  • 69th & Cliff: Cherry Coke Chip
  • Tea: Scotcheroo
  • Brandon: O.P.B., or Oreo Peanut Butter
  • Harrisburg: Caramel Corn Crunch
  • Mitchell: Cinnabomb

Polar Bites is having a Stuff Your Stanley promotion from noon to 9 p.m. Monday. Bring a clean Stanley cup or knockoff – up to 40 ounces – and fill it with a frozen treat for $12. Options include vanilla soft serve, Dole Whip, shaved ice or signature shaved ice, along with one topping and one sauce of your choice.

Top Hat Bar is helping raise money for the Sioux Falls Sliders softball team to play at the Gay Softball World Series in Texas. For $15, get all the beer you can drink and Indian tacos you can eat from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, or while supplies last. Just want the food? That’s $10. Just want the beer? That’s $10.

Nunzio’s Food Hall has created a Picnic Package for $40 that features a wood-fired pizza of your choice, a Jambon Beurree sandwich and choux au craquelin or cannoli. Nunzio’s is part of Harvester Kitchen by Bryan, which is near Levitt at the Falls, making it another food option for concert nights. Orders must be placed online one day in advance.

The featured entrees of the month at R Wine Bar & Kitchen are Velvet Beet Pasta, which is spaghetti tossed in a roasted beetroot sauce with a touch of lemon and topped with housemade ricotta, toasted walnuts and micro basil, and Chilean Empanadas stuffed with beef, onion, egg, olive and raisin. Dessert offerings are key lime cheesecake and turtle creme brulee.

Shenanigans Sports Bar & Grill has new featured menu items that are expected to be available until early September. They’re served for lunch and dinner. Included in the photo are The Gobliano and Caribbean Philly.

The burger of the month at Big Sioux Burger is the Chicago Dog Burger. A smashed beef patty is topped with a beef hot dog, cheese sauce, diced tomato, diced onion, relish, yellow mustard, sport peppers and a pickle spear on a seeded bun.

Next door at Big Sioux Burger’s sister restaurant Dahlia Kitchen + Bar, the bartenders have added a margarita of the month to go with the taco of the month. The Cuco Mango is crafted with cucumber-infused Joven Mezcal, mango, lime and agave, rimmed with Tajin. The featured taco for August is birria. It’s filled with beef birria, pickled red onion, fried Fresno peppers and a melted Oaxaca cheese blend, with birria broth for dipping.

The Dive’s sandwich of the month is the Honey Sriracha Pork Tenderloin — a platter-sized, hand-breaded, fried tenderloin topped with a drizzle of sriracha and honey pineapple slaw. It’s also available with just onions and pickles.

August specials at Monks Ale House include a pizza and a burger. Sausage & Peppers Pizza has hot Italian link sausage, crumbled Italian sausage, bell peppers, red onions and Parmesan. Island Fire Dancer Burger features two smashed Certified Angus Beef patties, New School American cheese, Compart ham, grilled pineapple, pickled jalapenos and chipotle aioli on a Big Marty roll.

Gateway Bar & Grill’s August special is the Southern Pulled Pork Sammy.

The lucy of the month at Crooked Pint Ale House is the Cajun lucy. The patty is stuffed with American cheese and then topped with Monterey Jack, crispy jalapeno and polano peppers, haystack onions and remoulade. Get one for $12, dine-in only.

The sub of the month at Goodcents is the Twisted Turkey, with pepperoni as the twist. Get an 8-inch sandwich for $8.

Here are the weekly featured ice cream flavors at Stensland Family Farms, including the new Black Raspberry and seasonal Sweet Corn.

Featured flavors for August at Oh My Cupcakes are the new Peanut Butter and Jelly, along with Cotton Candy, Caramel by the Sea, Harvest Caramel Apple, Celebration and Snickerdoodle.

Scooter’s Coffee customers voted the Chips Ahoy Caramel Blender as their favorite over the Nutter Butter Blender in a recent competition. The drinks are available for another week before the fall menu drops. Other limited-time offerings that are leaving soon: Peach Pie Red Bull Infusion, Nutter Butter cake bites and bacon cheddar sliders.

Josiah’s Coffeehouse, Cafe & Bakery describes its August drink specials as “summer in a cup.” Shown in the photo are Funnel Cake Latte, Loco Coco Mocha and Strawberries & Cream Italian Soda.

Casa del Rey’s margarita of the month is The Sandlot. It’s made with Don Julio Reposado, Gran Gala and kiwi-guava juice.

While the annual Shark Week and Sharkfest television shows were in July, Chili’s is celebrating “Shark Month” in August with The Shark Attack Margarita for $6.

Great Shots has added several new summertime cocktails to the menu: Lotus Martini, Beach Breeze, Coconut Cucumber Cooler, Sweet Chili Shandy, Pink Lemonade, Raspberry Refresher, The Fairway and Royal Peach Sunset. The Transfusion is making a return appearance.

The Human Bean will donate a portion of drink sales Friday to St. Francis House as part of the coffee chain’s annual Food Drive Giveback. For every drink sold, the new coffee shop at 2801 E. Jackson St. will donate $1 — the equivalent of three meals.

Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers is celebrating National Frozen Custard Day for three days. Order in the app Friday through Sunday to get a frost or shake for $1 to $3 depending on the size.

If you’re a fan of minnow racing, The Hideway in Brandon is having a contest Saturday as part of its parking lot party. Twenty minnows will be auctioned off at 1:30 p.m., with racing beginning at 2 p.m. The competition is double elimination.

The annual Howdy Hey honky tonk party Aug. 14 at The Hello Hi will feature barbecue from The Smoked Culture BBQ & Brews. Food will be served beginning at 5 p.m. DJ Thomas Hentges will be playing country tunes beginning at 7 p.m.

Changes in hours, service

  • Skip the line at Bagel Boy on Minnesota Avenue. The shop now offers online ordering for pickup from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays.
  • Look’s Marketplace no longer serves breakfast sandwiches Tuesday through Friday. Look’s Bakehouse remains open with pastries and coffee. Full breakfast is available on the weekend.
  • Carnaval Brazilian Grill is now open on Sundays. Hours are noon to 8 p.m.
  • TJz Bar & Restaurant in Colton will be closed Monday and Tuesday for updates that are coming over the next month.
