City building permits pass $800M through September

Through the first nine months of the year, Sioux Falls building activity has surpassed $800 million.

Permits totaled $801 million through September, down from $881.8 million a year ago and $1.7 billion two years ago.

New residential construction is a bright spot for the year so far, totaling $181 million, versus $150.4 million a year ago. That represents 425 single-family homes, compared with 349 homes last year and 593 homes two years ago.

Residential remodeling is down slightly at $69.3 million, compared with $80.3 million a year ago.

New commercial activity is creeping closer to 2023, totaling $409.2 million through September, compared with $453.5 million.

Major projects permitted in September include a 72-door trucking facility for Old Dominion Freight Line at 4000 W. 62nd St. N. at $17 million and the Everhome Suites extended-stay hotel near the Sanford Sports Complex at $11 million.

Commercial additions and remodeling work are tracking behind last year at $141.5 million, compared with $197.6 million.

Multifamily building, which is categorized with commercial projects, includes 1,042 units through the first three quarters, versus 1,553 units for the same time last year and 3,255 units two years ago.
