A new salon on the west side introduces a unique, colorful twist for your furry friend.

And it’s one you need to see to fully appreciate.

The Colorful K9 is an all-inclusive, one-on-one, creative styling salon where groomers take creativity to a new level beyond classic grooming services.

With almost a decade of grooming experience, owner Heidi MacRunnels decided it was time to start her own business and offer something new.

Her salon is at 8002 W. 41st St., east of Ellis Road.

“I’ve always been fascinated by the creative aspect of grooming and the ability to offer more luxury services,” MacRunnels said. “I love that you can see the pet’s personality more when you add some fun color.”

She was inspired by a California-based groomer who is famous in the world of creative color dog styling – and wanted to offer a similar service in Sioux Falls.

And if you were wondering, the color dye used on her canine clients is in fact FDA-approved for your pet.

“The products are lab tested and literally edible if you want to try it,” she said.

That is one of two common concerns MacRunnels often addresses with her potential clients. The other is more specifically about color styling a dog without their ability to consent.

She refers to a grooming contentment chart on her website, which helps communicate with owners their pet’s behavior and level of comfortability during a service.

“There’s a lot of miscommunication in the grooming world between groomers and pet owners, and this chart is a good way to discuss where a dog falls on the chart and where they should be for safe, comfortable grooming.”

In order to determine that, The Colorful K9 will require a regular grooming before any creative work is done. MacRunnels and her staff are also dog CPR trained in the event of an accident.

If creative color styling isn’t for you, grooming services are available, and prices vary by the pet’s weight.

“We include things like deshedding, teeth cleaning and other add-ons that would otherwise be extra at most grooming salons,” she said.

MacRunnels’ dream for the business extends beyond exceptional services, she said. She wants to foster a shared passion for dogs and transparent communication with clients.

“I love nothing more than hearing ‘Wow, I had no idea!’ when educating and surprising clients with insights into their pets, breeds and the grooming processes.”

The Colorful K9 grand-opening event is Sunday, and MacRunnels will begin taking appointments next week for weekdays only.
