8 S.D. companies named to Inc. 5000 list of fastest-growing businesses

Aug. 15, 2023

Eight South Dakota companies rank among the nation’s fastest-growing businesses, according to the annual Inc. 5000 list.

Companies must apply to qualify for the list and have been generating revenue by March 31, 2019, and be U.S.-based, privately held, for-profit and independent — not subsidiaries or divisions of other companies — as of Dec. 31, 2022. The minimum revenue required for 2019 is $100,000; the minimum for 2022 is $2 million.

The South Dakota companies making the list are:

  • No. 530: Rising Hope Counseling, Pierre, 1,111 percent growth. Counseling and psychiatric medication service providers helping people who are experiencing emotional, psychological, personal or family problems.
  • No. 1,318: Barton Publishing, Brandon, 442 percent growth. Digital publisher of books and newsletters about natural health solutions and home remedies, with over 1 million books sold.
  • No. 2,059: Vanilla Bean Kings, Hartford, 273 percent growth. Vanilla Bean Kings supplies gourmet vanilla products and vanilla beans from around the world.
  • No. 2,716: Ruff Land Performance, Tea, 197 percent growth. Custom rotational molding company that says it “takes old plastic dog kennels to the next level in safety, durability, customization and affordability.”
  • No. 2,891: MarketBeat, Sioux Falls, 182 percent growth. Digital media company providing real-time financial data and objective market analysis, allowing individual investors to make better trading decisions.
  • No. 2,969: Summit Contracting, Platte, 176 percent growth. Construction company building farm structures that protect crops and livestock, including storage structures, confinements, commercial buildings and more.
  • No. 4,651: Expansion Capital Group, Sioux Falls, 87 percent growth. Financial services firm partnering with small-business owners to provide working capital solutions with “speed, simplicity and service.”
  • No. 4,847: Premier Systems Roofing, Sioux Falls, 79 percent growth. Residential roofing company serving residential and commercial customers with financing options and 24/7 service.

Last year, 10 South Dakota companies made the list. Three were repeats this year.

For MarketBeat, this represents the company’s eighth consecutive year on the list — something fewer than 1 percent of companies on the list achieve, founder and CEO Matt Paulson said.

“After a slower 2022, MarketBeat is back in growth mode. We’re forecasting about 20 percent revenue growth this year and just posted two new positions as we continue to scale the business,” he said. “We are in the middle of a corporate transformation process, evolving from a small business to being a significant player in the digital media market. We are moving into our new office this fall, plan on hiring several additional positions in the next year and are really looking to scale the business.”

Combined, the South Dakota companies making the list had 190 percent median growth. They reported $213 million in total revenue and added 161 jobs.

It’s the 41st year the Inc. 5000 list has been published.
