605 Night Market shifts street-level entertainment approach — and wait until you see it

Note: This event has been rescheduled for 12 to 6 p.m. Aug. 29 in the Cherapa Place parking lot.

No matter if you’ve been to the 605 Night Market every year or if this weekend will be your first time, this event is about to feel very different — in an entertaining way.

This year, the Night Market is switching up its entertainment style from the traditional, one-stage, one-performance model to one reminiscent of an Asian street market — exactly the inspiration for the refresh.

What does that mean? Several different entertainers, all at street level, all doing something different, at the same time.

“We just wanted to bring the entertainment down to street level, to interact with the crowd. I think it will be a more personal experience and I think people are missing that,” said Stacy Wengler, co-owner of the Knotty Gnome. “And I think just the variety is really going to be fun. There will be something for kids, for adults, people who want to listen to music and watch entertainment.”

One of these unique entertainers is Tyler Duffy, who is a Sioux Falls native and a yo-yo extraordinaire. If you stop by his space at the Night Market, you’ll likely hear upbeat music, see some impressive yo-yo tricks and maybe get pulled up by Duffy to learn some tricks yourself.

Duffy began learning to yo-yo about four years ago when he attended a Sioux Falls Stampede game and received a free yo-yo, he said.

“It just kind of went from there,” Duffy said. “I even got to go on a mission trip to Africa and teach people there how to yo-yo.”

Since that fateful Stampede game, Duffy’s made appearances at many competitions, including the Midwest Regional Yo-Yo Championship, where he received first place, and the Junior National Yo-Yo Contest in 2019, where he received first place in the 12 and under category.

Although Duffy’s already received some heavy accolades, he says his goals don’t stop at the junior level.

“Someday I want to go to the world championships,” Duffy said. “When I’m older, though.”

As for right now, though, you can stop by the Night Market this weekend and see Duffy’s tricks for yourself.

“I’m excited to be there, to show people my tricks and just hang out,” Duffy said.

The 605 Made Night Market will be from 12 to 6 p.m. Aug. 29 in the parking lot of Cherapa Place. It’s co-organized by Knotty Gnome Variety & Salvage and SiouxFalls.Business and sponsored by The First National Bank in Sioux Falls and Dow Rummel Village.

Here’s the rest of the entertainment lineup:

  • 4 p.m.: Sioux Falls Lion Dance
  • 4:30 p.m.: Professional yo-yoist Ty Duffy, junior national yo-yo champion
  • 5 p.m.: Link West, old-time Americana and FM hits
  • 6 p.m.: Magician Travis Nye of Spellbound Magic Shop & Theatre
  • 6:30 p.m.: Jazz a Tres, jazz trio of trombone, saxophone and guitar that performs songs from the Great American Songbook, jazz standards and Broadway favorites
  • 8 p.m.: Back Alley, folk and folk rock music
  • 9 p.m.: Fire performance by Maria and Keri
