Volunteers needed: Three things to know about the GreatLIFE Challenge

Meet top players in women’s golf, get outside and give back by volunteering at the GreatLIFE Challenge, a stop on the Symetra Tour’s Road to the LPGA.

“It’s just a great event and fun to be involved in and see these things come to fruition,” volunteer coordinator Cheryl Dodd said. “We worked hard to get some of these things to Sioux Falls, so it’s nice to support it and participate in it.”

It takes 200 volunteers to help put on the event, which marks four years in Sioux Falls this year and runs Aug. 30-Sept. 2 at Willow Run Golf Course.

Thinking of helping out?

Here are three things to know.

You don’t need to know golf

You’ll be watching some of the best golfers in the sport, but you don’t need to know more than that to help at the tournament.

“We do volunteer training before the event in case anyone has questions or concerns, and we’ll make sure you have all the tools you need,” Dodd said.

Volunteers help with tasks such as cart driving, marshaling people and scoring.

“A lot of times you’re here to greet the gals when they walk up and just make sure people are being quiet and that kind of thing,” Dodd said.

You don’t need to commit the whole time

As a multiday tournament, it takes a lot of help to put on the GreatLIFE Challenge. But you don’t need to be there the whole time.

“We just welcome them to come volunteer when it works for you,” Dodd said.

If you volunteer for at least three sessions, though, there’s a perk.

“You’ll get a pass to golf at any GreatLIFE course,” Dodd said. “And if you’re already a member, you’ll get a cart pass. So that’s enticing and encourages some folks to give it a try and have the opportunity to play some of the great courses GreatLIFE offers.”

You’ll be giving back

Like almost all major golf tournaments, there’s a fee to volunteer. At the GreatLIFE Challenge, it’s $40, which gives you a shirt and your choice between a hat or visor as well as meals on your shift. If you volunteered last year, you can wear last year’s shirt, and the fee is waived.

But, the best part is, the GreatLIFE Challenge helps support GreatLIFE Cares, a foundation that contributes to community causes.

“We ask our volunteers signing up if they would like to see a nonprofit benefit from some of the funds we make here at the tournament, so that’s a win-win,” Dodd said.
