Even after more than a decade, it takes a little explaining: You buy a mattress here once, and you can update the feel for as long as you own it.

“Once people understand they don’t need to throw away their mattress — they can bring it back and get it refreshed — they think it’s the best service in the world,” said Eric Wuebben, general manager at Beds by Design.

Wuebben, who first became connected to the company 10 years ago, compares the concept to changing tires on your car.

“We brought parts into the mattress industry, so we have the ability to change the feel of the bed as long as you own it,” he said. “For as long as you own the mattress, if you don’t like it, I can adjust it, tune it up or upgrade it.”

Locally owned Beds by Design at 2720 S. Louise Ave. also has a location in Fargo and does all its assembly and manufacturing on-site. Foams, fabrics and coils are all U.S-made.

“Basically, you go buy a mattress and hope it lasts five to 10 years, and we’re trying to change the throwaway culture,” Wuebben said. “And if you have a queen mattress and want to upgrade it to a king, you can trade it in anytime, and we’ll give you 50 percent of what you spent on it and build you a brand-new king. People love that they don’t have to buy mattress after mattress.”

And everyone loves a good deal.

They’re in 150 chiropractic locations because they’re an amazing product. We started as a mattress shop that sells pillows, and now we’re practically a pillow shop; that’s how popular they are.”

“If the pillow goes flat, we’ll restuff it, and it doesn’t cost you anything,” Wuebben said.

It’s more than a gym membership, he added.
