Twin Cities law firm opens office in downtown Sioux Falls

A longtime Minneapolis law firm has expanded with an office in downtown Sioux Falls.
Bassford Remele recently opened its location at The Steel District, where two full-time lawyers are based and others from Minneapolis are splitting time.
One of them is Casey Marshall, a partner in the firm who chairs the business and commercial litigation practice group, co-chairs the trust and estate-litigation practice group and serves on the firm’s board of directors.
In Sioux Falls, “our plan is to be a full-service office,” he said. “Right now, we have a fully functioning trust and estate department. … We plan to have corporate business lawyers, real estate, construction, health care lawyers and commercial litigation.”
Longtime attorneys Kelly Benson and Travis Benson have joined the firm as its Sioux Falls-based lawyers in the trust and estate group, including expertise in agribusiness.
Bassford Remele was established in 1882 and has more than 50 attorneys, representing “a really wide range of practice groups across industries,” Marshall said.
It serves as local and national counsel for many major corporations and Fortune 500 companies, providing counsel and representation in litigation and dispute resolution, family law and corporate matters.
The firm already had clients in Sioux Falls within its trust and estate group, “so we wanted to be there for existing clients and expand those relationships,” he said.
“I found myself spending more and more time over there, and it’s a really vibrant business community. It’s exciting how fast you’re growing, and it’s really dynamic and forward-thinking. It has everything a big city has, but the business community seems to be based more on personal relationships, which is really nice.”
Health care, real estate and construction law offer an especially good fit for the market, he added.
While the firm is looking to add to its team in Sioux Falls, “we don’t plan to just fill our offices,” Marshall said. “We have what we want in mind, and we’d rather wait and be patient and get the right people.”
The downtown space has nine offices for attorneys plus space for staff.
“There’s a litany of things” that led to The Steel District being selected as the firm’s location, Marshall said.
“It’s a beautiful new location,” he said. “I would just imagine it’s going to be a vibrant, cool area to be in.”
Sioux Falls is the first expansion market where Bassford Remele has an office. A grand opening is planned for later this year.
