Through midyear, city building activity surpasses $700M

Sioux Falls building activity has exceeded $723 million for the first half of the year.
That far surpasses $485.1 million last year and $570.6 million two years ago.
Almost every category of construction is outperforming previous years.
New commercial construction totaled $417.8 million, versus last year’s $257 million and $307.4 million two years ago.
The largest permits so far this year exceeded $100 million each for the women and children’s expansion on the Avera McKennan Hospital campus and the new Good Samaritan Society Founder’s Crossing at 57th Street and Veterans Parkway.
The largest permit for June was $17.7 million for the The Nova apartment complex. That’s located in southeast Sioux Falls at 4401 E. Bison Trail from Empire Co.
Commercial expansions and remodeling projects totaled $160.6 million so far this year, compared with $95.2 million last year and $140.2 million two years ago.
On the residential side, new home construction totaled $104.5 million, compared with $91.7 million last year and $73.1 million two years ago. That represents 200 new single-family homes, compared with 271 for the first half of last year and 181 two years ago.
Residential remodeling is down slightly at $40.4 million, versus $41.2 million last year and $49.9 million two years ago.
The city has issued permits for 659 multifamily units through June, ahead of 563 last year and behind 1,109 two years ago.
