Three nonprofits combine, announce new name

Oct. 13, 2025

Three Sioux Falls nonprofits officially have consolidated and announced a new name.

The Compass Center, Family Services Inc. and Move to Heal now collectively are known as Solace.

“The merger creates the region’s first fully integrated healing agency, combining crisis intervention, clinical therapy and trauma-informed somatic approaches under one coordinated system,” the organization said in a statement.

The brand was chosen to represent safety, trust, presence and whole-person healing while communicating strength and compassion.

“Solace represents comfort and consolation in a time of stress – a safe harbor and steady presence,” said Chris Kappen, Solace board president. “This consolidation addresses a critical gap in how our community responds to those seeking support. Rather than navigating multiple organizations, individuals and families will now access coordinated care, from crisis through recovery.”

The Solace brand includes modifiers that will appear alongside the logomark:

  • Solace Crisis Care – Immediate intervention for survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, human trafficking and child abuse.
  • Solace Therapy Center – Clinical mental health services for all ages.
  • Solace Healing Arts – Trauma-informed body-based approaches for youths impacted by adverse childhood experiences.

The consolidation brings together complementary services:

  • Crisis Care — formerly The Compass Center: Specialized crisis intervention, 24/7 advocacy services, crisis counseling and immediate support for survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, human trafficking and relationship trauma.
  • Therapy Center — formerly Family Services Inc.: Clinical therapy services for children, youths and families, including comprehensive mental health treatment and employee assistance programs.
  • Healing Arts — formerly Move to Heal: Innovative, trauma-informed programs utilizing trauma-sensitive yoga, dance movement and creative expression for youths navigating trauma.

Solace will serve:

  • More than 1,000 individuals annually through crisis intervention and advocacy services.
  • Almost 900 clients annually through clinical therapy services.
  • Almost 100 youths through trauma-informed healing arts programs.
  • Hundreds more through community performances and prevention education.

“Every person’s path to healing is different, which is why we need multiple ways to support them,” said Terra Vennard, Solace board member. “This integration allows us to address the whole person – mind, body and spirit – with coordinated expertise across all stages of recovery.”

The organization operates from its new location at 2210 S. Brown Place, near 49th Street and Western Avenue, using a combined board of directors and integrated leadership team.

“This is about creating a place of comfort and strength for people seeking support,” said Anne Rieck McFarland, interim executive director. “Healing begins the moment someone walks through our doors, and we’re building something that honors every journey with expert care and authentic connection.”
