Survey: South Dakotans most crave a Trader Joe’s location
Oct. 24, 2025
South Dakotans have spoken: When it comes to big brands, the one they’d most like to see in the state is Trader Joe’s.
The popular grocery chain topped a list of more than 3,000 residents surveyed by Sioux Falls-based MarketBeat about which chain or franchise they would like to see closer to home.
Southern-style fried chicken restaurant Bojangles came in second, followed by upscale natural and organic grocer Whole Foods Market.
Most-requested chains varied by state.
For instance, Sioux Falls has four Aldi locations, but there are none in Colorado. The discount chain topped the list of requested brands in that state.
In California and Oregon, residents are envious of Culver’s and asked for that brand the most.
North Dakotans went with an Ikea furniture store, while Minnesotans and Nebraskans want an In-and-Out Burger. Iowans most requested Shake Shack.
“It’s fascinating to see how much excitement a single brand can generate in a community. These results highlight both the emotional pull of national chains and the opportunities that exist for businesses willing to expand into new regions,” said Matt Paulson, founder of MarketBeat.
