Study: South Dakotans say inflation making it harder to meet expenses

May 16, 2022

The number of South Dakotans who say they’re having a very difficult time meeting their household expenses has doubled in the past year.

That’s according to an analysis of the U.S. Census Bureau’s Household Plus survey conducted by LendingTree’s website Quote Wizard.

It found 14 percent of South Dakotans surveyed this month said they’re having a very difficult time meeting household expenses, double the 7 percent that answered the same thing last June.

Forty-two percent of South Dakotans said they are having no difficulty covering expenses, while 44 percent said they’re having slight or moderate difficulty.

The report was part of a state-by-state look at the impact of inflation, which reached an annual rate of 8.3 percent at the end of April.

Louisiana and Florida had the highest number of people having a “very difficult” time, and Minnesota and Wisconsin had the most people with “no difficulty.”
