Spoke-N-Sport to consolidate into one location — and expand it

Sept. 12, 2024

A local bike and ski retailer is consolidating its operations into one location in Sioux Falls.

Spoke-N-Sport, which has two locations, will close its store at 2019 S. Minnesota Ave. to concentrate operations and expand services at its Cliff Avenue location, owner Peter Oien said.

“We’ve had our location at 3401 S. Cliff Ave. for three years, and it’s gone well,” Oien said. “People like the location off the bike trail, and it’s convenient.”

But, he said, it’s also difficult to staff two locations. And, it can be frustrating to have to send people back and forth to the shops for products and services.

“This lets us expand our services at Cliff Avenue,” he said. The shop will take over additional space to the south in the building, more than doubling its space. “We’ll have faster turnaround and the ability to leave your bike for services. We’ll also offer boot and bike fitting. We will be able to locate everything into a place we are excited about – near mountain bike trails and the bike trail and cross-country ski trails and snowshoeing.”

The Minnesota Avenue location has been open for 13 years. Oien said the last day of business will be Sept. 28 at that location, and everything is on sale.

“We have bikes up to 50 percent off,” Oien said.

The Cliff Avenue store will be open the entire time while remodeling happens in the additional space, which will house the ski and snowboard equipment at first. Three years ago, the business expanded to include a full line of ski and snowboard equipment and apparel. It’s the only full-service ski shop in the Sioux Falls area, offering tuning and maintenance by trained specialists.

“We are super-excited to have our knowledge and resources in one place so we can help people,” Oien said. “We are super-excited to offer an increased level of service to our customers.”

The Cliff Avenue location will be open seven days a week. Oien said he’s excited about the future of the shop.

“Consolidating all our products and services in one store has a lot of advantages,” Oien said.

“First of all, it’s a great location that’s easy to get to. The bike trail connects right to our parking lot from Spencer Park. Plus, the bulk of the city’s single-track mountain bike trails are right there, as well as groomed cross-country skiing and fat biking in the winter.”

Sioux Falls-area residents also can expect to see more events with the consolidation. Spoke-N-Sport hosts a variety of bike rides throughout the year, including the well-known New Year’s Day Ride, according to a news release.

Oien said focusing on the South Cliff location opens up other options for more mountain biking, skiing and disc golf.

“We’re right in the middle of one of the best stretches of greenway in the city,” he said. “What could be better than that?”
