Spicy mustard made with 48 peppers to debut at Night Market

Note: This event has been rescheduled for 12 to 6 p.m. Aug. 29 in the Cherapa Place parking lot.

To Mark and Jodi Wilson, 48 Peppers isn’t just a business name, but a lifestyle. Although, their increasingly popular spicy mustard does have a whopping 48 peppers packed into a jar.

It all began with her hobby of canning, Jodi Wilson said.

“We started out with salsa and your basic things and then came across a mustard recipe,” she said. “And the funny thing is, Mark has no real interest in mustard or using it on anything. I found out I was the only one eating it. So then I kind of started sharing with my family that were interested in it. We were like, gosh, we really kind of like this.”

After the success within her family, the Wilsons started sharing the mustard around their hometown of Mitchell, and the rest was history.

“We had people asking, ‘Can you make me a case of that?’ and so we did,” Wilson said. “It started making its way around the Mitchell community from there. We just decided maybe we’ll try and see what we can do if we have it commercially canned and get it out to more people.”

The 605 Made Night Market will be 48 Peppers’ debut to the general public. They will be selling their “Give Me All the Peppers” spicy mustard, which is the only flavor they have commercially canned so far. But, Wilson says, there have been many who use the mustard as more than just a condiment, and she encourages the multifaceted use.

“The biggest thing is when people first hear of mustard, they just think of something that you use just as a condiment,” Wilson said. “And what we’re finding is people are using it for more of a dip with pretzels or chips. We had someone that actually contacted us who used it as the base of a pizza. It’s just kind of gone out of our expectations of how people would use it. It’s really fun to see other people get creative with your product.”

The 605 Made Night Market will be from 12 to 6 p.m. Aug. 29 in the parking lot of Cherapa Place. It’s co-organized by Knotty Gnome Variety & Salvage and SiouxFalls.Business and sponsored by The First National Bank in Sioux Falls and Dow Rummel Village.
