Feb. 3, 2025
Sioux Falls is off to its strongest building year ever.
The city reported a record permit valuation for January, totaling $102.4 million.
For the same time last year, it was $35.9 million, and two years ago, it was $62.3 million.
This year’s big month was helped by a $31.6 million permit for Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center to construct the shell for its women and children’s services building on the main campus.
The month also brought a $16 permit for the city of Sioux Falls for a new facility for the light, power and traffic departments at 5225 E. 60th St. N.
New commercial activity totaled $37.7 million, compared with $14.3 million last year. Commercial additions and remodeling projects, which includes Avera, totaled $55.5 million versus $14.3 million last year.
New residential construction is similar to last year at $3.9 million, compared with $4 million in 2024 and up from $1.8 million in 2023. That represents 12 new single-family homes compared with 14 for the same time last year.
Multifamily also is off to a big start, with permits issued for 190 units, compared with 38 last year and 63 two years ago.
Residential remodeling work also is ahead of last year at $5.3 million, compared with $3.4 million.
