Sioux Falls native returns to specialize in corporate, real estate law

Dec. 10, 2019

This week’s Up-and-Comer is Mike Srstka, a new associate attorney at Davenport Evans Lawyers.

Name: Mike Srstka

Age: 35

Hometown: Sioux Falls

What brought you to Sioux Falls?

My wife, Jessica, recently completed her medical training, and it made perfect sense for us to move back to the area. I was born and raised in Sioux Falls and graduated high school here. My wife, Jessica, also grew up near Sioux Falls, so most of our family members live in the area. We wanted our kids to be able to grow up near family. Jessica also was offered a great position as a rheumatologist at Avera, and I found a great opportunity to practice law here, so Sioux Falls is a perfect fit for my family.

What keeps you in Sioux Falls?

We have deep roots in the area, and there are great career opportunities here. We also like the low cost of living, good school systems and safe neighborhoods. There are a lot of interesting cultural activities in Sioux Falls. The South Dakota Symphony is great, and there are lots of interesting businesses and restaurants opening up all the time.

What’s your favorite thing about your job?

Davenport Evans has a lot of great and experienced lawyers who are generous with their time and provide a lot of feedback and mentorship to young attorneys. I’m extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to specialize in corporate and real estate law, and I enjoy learning something new every day. There are lots of exciting things happening in Sioux Falls, which continues to see impressive growth every year, and I enjoy being a part of the process.

How did you get connected to your industry?

My family has a very strong history in the practice of law. I was always interested in getting as much education as possible. I enjoyed the humanities, and I wanted to learn more about how the world works, so law school was a good option for me. When my wife matched for a residency program in Virginia, I had the opportunity to attend the University of Virginia School of Law.

What’s your favorite way to give back to your community?

I’m quite busy for the moment with young children and a new career, but I like to volunteer my services as a church pianist when possible. I served as a pianist in the regional Air Force band stationed near Omaha before going to law school and am looking for ways to keep playing music on the weekend.

What’s one business you’d like to see in Sioux Falls that isn’t here now?

Chick-fil-A.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I see myself raising my kids in Sioux Falls, hopefully getting them involved in music and the arts and eventually becoming a partner at Davenport Evans.
