Sioux Falls exceeds $1B in building activity sooner than past 2 years

Sioux Falls building permits have passed the $1 billion mark for the year, helped by the second-best permitting month of the year.
After a slowdown in August, September rebounded to put the city at $1.03 billion, up from $801 million last year and $881.8 million two years ago.
Sioux Falls reached $1 billion in building activity two months earlier than in 2023 and 2024.
New commercial activity is leading the way at $516.2 million versus $409.2 million last year and $453.5 million two years ago. Commercial additions and remodeling projects totaled $268.1 million compared with $141.5 million for the same time last year and $197.6 million two years ago.
The largest project that received a permit in September was part of the terminal expansion for the Sioux Falls Regional Airport at $44.1 million.

New residential construction totaled $177.6 million through the first three quarters, down from $181 million last year and $150.4 million two years ago. The city has issued building permits for 287 single-family homes, down from 425 for the same time last year and 349 two years ago. Permits have been issued for 846 multifamily units compared with 1,806 last year and 2,193 two years ago.
Residential addition and remodeling permits totaled $64.6 million, down from $69.3 million last year and $80.3 million two years ago.
