Sioux Falls building activity shows slowdown

Building activity in Sioux Falls is starting to fall behind previous years.

The total value of permits issued through May was $365.7 million, down from $639.7 million for the same time last year and $394.4 million two years ago.

The biggest drop is in new commercial, which totaled $166.4 million for the first five months of 2026, compared with $369.4 million last year and $208.9 million two years ago.

Commercial additions and remodeling projects totaled $102.4 million through May, versus $155.6 million last year and $81.5 million two years ago.

New residential construction valuation also is lagging behind the past two years, totaling $64.1 million, compared with $82.3 million last year and $71.6 million two years ago.

No projects greater than $10 million were issued permits in May.

New residential construction totaled $64.1 million so far this year, compared with $82.3 million in 2025 and $71.6 million in 2024.

That represents 158 single-family homes, versus 151 last year and 206 two years ago.

The city has issued 317 multifamily units, compared with 312 last year and 511 two years ago. Those projects are considered commercial construction.

Residential additions and remodeling projects totaled $32.9 million for the year so far, compared with $32.5 million last year and $32.4 million two years ago.
