Sioux Falls Arts Council looks for new executive director

June 7, 2019

The Sioux Falls Arts Council is seeking candidates for its executive director position.

The new leader will report to the board of directors and act as the primary spokesperson for the organization. The position is responsible for stakeholder engagement, advocacy and resource development, according to a statement.

The role has been vacant since March 2018 when former executive director Kara Dirkson left the council to go into self-employed fine arts services. President Alex Hagen said the organization has continued to carry out its mission during this year of transition.

“We’ve relied heavily on Angelica Mercado,” Hagen said of the council’s operations manager. “She’s been very instrumental on continuing our programming. The board has also chipped in and contributed a lot.”

The council wants candidates to have a degree from an accredited four-year college in nonprofit management, arts/business administration, public administration or an arts field. It also is looking for leadership skills and the drive to advocate for the arts in Sioux Falls.

“We’re ultimately looking for someone who is passionate about the arts,” Hagen said. “They need to understand the community and how the organization has tried to foster art participation. The position certainly has duties of administration and fundraising, but its main purpose is understanding the mission (of the council) and how the Sioux Falls community might benefit from the arts.”
