Shortage of cooks leads to restaurant’s temporary closure

Aug. 25, 2022

All Day Cafe is closed temporarily because of a shortage of line cooks.

The restaurant on the north side of the Western Mall made the decision to close today, said Don Anderson, president of WR Hospitality. The Sioux Falls-based restaurant group also owns the adjacent TapHouse 41, which remains open, and the Phillips Avenue Diner, 22Ten Kitchen Cocktails and other restaurants in South Dakota and the region.

All Day Cafe announced the closure to customers on its Facebook page and website.

“Unfortunately, being short staffed is the new pandemic. We are so thankful for our patrons and hope to be open to serve you again soon.

“We are urgently hiring cooks. If you or anyone you know is looking for a great day-time opportunity to work in our kitchen serving up the best brunch in town, please follow this link.”

Anderson said he isn’t sure when All Day Cafe will be able to reopen. He’s meeting with the restaurant’s management and staff, and said he hopes to have a clearer picture of the situation by Friday.

“We need at least four cooks to reopen,” he said. With vacations, illnesses, problems with reliability and the return of school, it wasn’t possible to operate.

“It’s a transition usually at the end of August, and when you lose somebody, there’s nobody to hire,” Anderson said.

The restaurant is advertising pay for line cooks at $16 to $19, he said.

Editor’s note: On Aug. 26, Anderson provided corrected information about the pay for line cooks.
