Sanford plans research growth in Fargo with acquisition

June 25, 2018

In a move expected to advance Sanford’s research capabilities in Fargo, the Sioux Falls-based health system has acquired the Neuropsychiatric Research Institute.

NRI was established in 1955 and has shared resources and collaborated closely with Sanford, and previously Meritcare, since 1961. Over the last 20 years, NRI has focused on eating disorders, obesity and outcomes of bariatric surgery.

“We’re excited to combine NRI’s innovative research with the outstanding programs we’ve built at Sanford Research. This is an opportunity for both organizations to grow and develop in new directions,” said Dave Pearce, Sanford Research executive vice president.

The goal is to establish a major research program in Fargo, Sanford leaders said.

“This is just the beginning for our vision of expanded research capabilities and opportunities in Fargo,” said Nate White, Sanford Fargo executive vice president. “The addition of NRI’s talented research staff to our Sanford Research team will help accelerate discovery for the health care treatments of the future.”

The research employees will become part of Sanford and have access to Sanford’s clinical resources, allowing for expanded research and enhanced potential treatments for patients.

“By partnering with Sanford, we are able to advance the work we are doing to help make a significant difference for people,” said Stephen Wonderlich, NRI’s president and scientific director, who will now be a vice president of Sanford Research in Fargo. “We are proud to become a part of an organization that is making strides in health care advancements, treatments and cures.”
