Runnings to buy Campbell Supply

Nov. 29, 2019

Sioux Falls-based Campbell Supply Co. is becoming part of Runnings Inc., a family-owned retailer that started in Marshall, Minn.

Runnings will acquire the seven Campbell’s stores and the Sioux Falls-based home office and distribution center at the end of the year. There are two stores in Sioux Falls and locations in Madison, Mitchell, Vermillion, Sturgis and Rock Rapids, Iowa.

Campbell’s was founded by Roy Campbell in 1954. Runnings was founded by Norman Running in 1947 and now is owned by the Dennis and Adele Reed family.

“Parntering with a company who is going to take care of our customers, our employees and preserve the Campbell’s legacy is extremely important to us,” Dave Campbell said in a statement posted at the store.

Campbell and his wife, Mary, own the company.

“We strongly feel that Runnings is the best fit for Campbell’s moving forward,” he said.

The plan is for Campbell’s to continue to operate as normal, the statement said.

“Our two companies coming together as a team to leverage buying power, add inventory and enhance product selection is a win-win for everyone,” Dennis Reed said. “And our retail family just added another 91 team members. We think that’s pretty exciting.”

Runnings has 47 stores and 2,400 employees in seven states. The retailer sells thousands of products in sporting goods, clothing, footwear, pet supplies, housewares, tools, farm supplies, lawn and garden supplies, toys and outdoor equipment. It also has a large inventory of hunting, fishing and archery equipment and accessories, as well as firearms.
